Not-a-Poll: Louisville's top restaurants?

by Robin Garr » Mon Jul 07, 2014 8:33 am

It's not a poll because it's not practical to list every eatery in town.

I thought it might be interesting, though, to see if we can crowd-source a consensus list of the city's top10 (or 5, 16, whatever) restaurants.

Let's proceed this way: Just toss in some names. Don't worry about repeating those others have posted. After we've collected a stack, we'll see what we've got, and maybe use that list to take a vote and end up with the final honor roll.

Thinking out loud, some I might include Seviche, 610 Magnolia, Asiatique, Rye, Wiltshire, MilkWood. the Place Downstairs ... but then, what about more casual but excellent winners like Vietnam Kitchen. El Camino, El Taco Luchador, Cafe Lou Lou ... well, you get the idea! Toss some names on the pile and let's see what we can do with this.

I don't know what criteria one would use to come up with a list of "best" restaurants, so I'll post some of my favorites. These are personal standbys that are our most frequently visited spots.

Guaca-Mole
Coals
Hammerheads
Mussel & Burger Bar
Nam Nam Cafe
Blue Dog Bakery
Harvest

Also, here's my summary of the mentions that a previous discussion along these lines generated:

Jeff Cavanaugh wrote:The leaders so far:

7 votes: Guaca Mole, Seviche, Volare
6 votes: Mussel & Burger Bar
5 votes: Equus/Jack's
4 votes: Selena's, Simply Thai
3 votes: Coal's, Havana Rumba, Jack Fry's, Varanese
2 votes: 610 Magnolia, Basa, Blind Pig, Corbett's, Dragon King's Daughter, Irish Rover, Majid's, Marketplace, Mayan Cafe, Milkwood, Mojido, Proof

*I treated "Fernando and Christina" as a vote each for Havana Rumba, Guaca Mole, and Mussel & Burger Bar.

Excellent institutional memory! Thanks, Jeff. It appears that was almost exactly one year ago. Blind Pig was still around, although I think it may have been staggering by then.

Robin-Thank you for the mental image of a staggering blind pig.
My favs:
Seviche - Best upscale with inventive chef's dishes
Jack Fry's - Best standard for service, that pork chop, and the shrimp & grits
Wiltshire on Market - Best always-changing consistently good menu
Blue Dog Bakery - Best bread at the best restaurants and serving an awesome lunch
Proof - Best restaurant in a hotel and best restrooms
Simply Thai - Best Thai and take-out if you don't mind the 30-40 min wait
Papalino's- Best take-out pizza
Holy Grale - Best beer and burger
Stevens & Stevens - Best approximation of New York deli sandwiches in town.

I could go on and on

Does Village Anchor count, or is it too far out?

If it's not too far out then Selena's definitely needs to be on the list. Other than that it sounds like about everything's been covered, especially when you throw in the ones from last year.

Not at all too far out, Ronnie. Metro Louisville is fine, and not Da Metro City but the 14-county metropolitan statistical area. Or, at a minimum, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Bullitt, Clark and Floyd. :)

Keep 'em coming, folks! We'll give it a few more days to gather input here and on Facebook, then once we're out of the Group Round, go on to the Round of Death eliminations.
