Country-Ham A Southern-Tradition of Hogs, Salt and Smoke

by Steve P » Thu Jun 19, 2014 6:45 pm

Steve Coomes is my favorite local writer and one of my favorite writers period...I really like his style. I just ordered my copy of his book this afternoon and can't wait to give it a gander. $15.59 on Amazon, $9.99 for the Kindle version.

Apparently I'm not the only one. Picture ripped off Steve's Facebook page and used without permission

Wow! I am going to buy it as well. Taking a trip to Seattle this summer and we are packing the bourbon, specialty foods and perhaps now a couple of hams!

Before you go, get over to Garage Bar and try The Ham Bar. They have a selection of different country hams sliced very thin, prosciutto style. Who knew there was more to it than biscuits and red eye gravy?

Speaking of country ham, where can I get great country ham by the pound - cooked in house and thinly sliced?

Margie,
I'm not sure that there are any places in Louisville area that cure their own and sell retail. My go to's for great country ham by the lb:
Morris' Deli- Taylorsville road - Fathers country ham
Colonel Newsome's- about 3 hrs from here- their own
Broadbent- maybe 2 hrs? - their own - you can also find steaks locally sometimes at Liquor Barn
The above two also do mail order but only for pieces/steaks.

Doesn't Finchville do retail at its ham operation in the Spencer County village of the same name, well under a half-hour from the East End? Or aren't they quite up to the Father's, Newsome's and Broadbent level?

Robin,
Someone else will have to comment on that one. I was aware that Finchville did and sliced country game by the lb. personally, I don't think they are up to the same level, but that's just my taste.
I so wish Woodlands Pork did retail- that would be fabulous ( do you hear me Jay?

We always get the sliced/by the pound Father's country ham at Morris's Deli. It is cooked in house and beautifully trimmed and sliced. I grew up virtually next door to the Broadbent's and we prefer the Father's! Thank you Tom Holstein :D!

If not by the pound can the hams be purchased whole in Louisville? Or do you have to make your way to the individual farms?

Well, let's see ... Doll's has them. D'oh! But Burger's has them! D'OH! I'm sure some places still do, though.
