Decca dumps Campari. What do you think?

by Robin Garr » Sat Jun 14, 2014 10:45 am

The bar at Decca isn't offering Campari any more, because it's no longer "all natural." They suggested Gran Classico as an alternative the other night, which I found similar but more perceptibly sweet.

Here’s an article from Medicinal Mixology that goes into some detail about the issue with Campari, and comparative tastings of some substitutes.

http://medicinalmixology.com/campari-an ... e-negroni/

What do you think? Are you a Campari fancier? Would you rather have them go back to, er, “bug juice”?

So this change happened 7 years ago?

Apparently so, Justin, but it came to my attention the other night when I couldn't get a Campari-soda or Campari Negroni at Decca because they recently took it off the bar.

"For curious Campari fans who need more of a comparison, Gran Classico has more interesting flavors that continue to develop on your palette...."

If we don't have a palette will the flavors continue to develop if we put it on a pallet instead?

Whole Foods doesn't sell Campari either for that reason.

I love a negroni, and Gran Classico makes a nice one.

I know Decca has a number of "natural" wines , but i didn't realize they were so focused on it.

I don't know how you people do it. Campari is disgusting. And I can't believe it is less desirable now that it is no longer colored with insect blood.

Yeah, I get it. And the answer is yes. But they have to be served hot. Shrimp cocktail weirds me out.

I have selective blinders on when it comes to what food is. I'm grossed out by milk but love cheese, ice cream and almost every other manipulated form of milk. I can eat bologna and hot dogs but have issues with foie gras and sweetbreads. A rare/plus steak is amazing but carpaccio is a no go.

Insect blood never enters the conversation.

If that's their stance, so be it.

Everybody has their own positions on various spirits. Sometimes it can get quite quirky. I refuse to work with Smirnoff because of a particular commercial that went a bit too far poking fun at barcraft.

So be it.

This. Additionally ALCOHOL is a chemical in and of itself, and a poison to the body. I drink so Im not trying to be holier than though, but to claim the alcohol is okay but the red dye #3 isnt seems a bit silly to me. Plus gin tastes like pine sap anyway, blech.
I eat, therefore I am.

"Natural" and "not natural" are useless terms.

If Decca had dumped Campari because the specific artificial color(s) used in it have been scientifically proven to cause X or Y negative health effect, I'd be sympathetic. As it is, though, "because it's not natural" tells me nothing except that they've been brainwashed by buzzwords.
