Barry's Cheesesteaks

by Richard S. » Thu Jun 05, 2014 1:14 pm

My wife and I stopped into this place last Saturday. It's on Preston roughly across the street from Hooter's. The food was much better than I expected. I had a chicken cheesesteak and my wife had wings. The cheesesteak bread was soft inside with a bit of crisp to the crust; the spicy garlic wings were nuclear hot.

It's a bit rough-looking (but clean) and I imagine someone might be put off by the Southern Baptist overtones of the décor, but it's just the type of local operation I like to support.

It's actually run as a sort of youth outreach program. Very nice people!

I MUST get my eyes checked- I read it as chicken cheesecakes and I just couldn't quite wrap my mind around the concept.

Well, I did exactly the same thing Gary! I immediately thought of the old "Chicken/Doughnuts" sign that used to hang in front of the Doughnut Castle in Lyndon.

Barry makes a really good cheesesteak. We head over for lunch every couple of weeks and have had reason to return. The person taking orders at the register is slow because they are usually new. They are not restaurant veterans at all but very friendly. Barry is very attentive and usually comes out from the kitchen to check out how everything is. The bread makes the sandwich. Soft and warm on the inside crispy outside. Chicken or Ribeye meat with options of peppers, mushrooms or hoagie styles. 6" is huge and the combo comes with a ton of fries. He has tuned in a spicier version of grippo fries that are great also. All made to order. I can see how the outside can cause skepticism but the facility is very simple and clean. Cant get much more local and unique as this especially for Preston Hwy. Give them a try.

My husband and I tried it last night and Barry could not have been a more gracious host. He said he had to come out from the kitchen and see how my husband liked his veggie cheesesteak with hot peppers since no one had ever ordered that combo before! My husband said it was excellent and Barry thanked us several times for coming. I ordered the chicken and while it was good, I would probably try something different next time. My husband is not a vegetarian (he just wasn't in the mood for meat last night) but he said he'd get the same thing next time.
