It ain't beef...is it? What is it?

by Carla G » Tue May 27, 2014 8:20 am

On occasion I stop by the local Chinese to-go restaurant near my home. I am very fond of their orange beef. I only eat beef on rare occasions so, it's a treat. My last trip there was extremely disappointing. I don't know what was in the middle of that breading but I will lay odds it wasn't beef. More like " beef". I saw no grain to the meat, the color was an artificial pink/gray and the texture was like blown insulation. I guess they are attempting to keep their costs down - I think $7.99 for any sort of sliced beef entree is cheap - but substituting that beef spam instead of a cheaper cut of sliced beef is unacceptable. I would rather pay more and get real meat, or at least have the option of ordering that from the menu. Has anyone else noticed this? And, finally, would it be worth any effort to overcome an extreme language barrier and complain or is that just a waste of time in this case? Does anybody know of ANY of these little carry out places (in the east end, outside the Watterson) that still uses real beef?

Or, seriously, do you think it could be textured vegetable protein or something? Keeping slaves isn't the only way that some cheap Chinese eateries save bucks. :(

I know exactly what you mean! I describe it as having a "gummy" texture that isn't reminiscent of any natural protein I'm aware of. I don't order beef for exactly that reason.

Did you ever think when you eat Chinese,
It aint pork or chicken but a fat siamese?
Yet the food tastes great, so you dont complain.
But thats not chicken in your chicken chow mein.

Seems to me I ordered sweet-and-sour pork
But Garfields on my fork.
Hes purrin here on my fork.

Theres a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon,
The place that I eat every day at noon.
They can feed you cat and youll never know,
Once they wrap it up in dough, boy.
They fry it real crisp in dough.

Chou Lin asked if I wanted more
As he was dialin up his buddy at the old pet store.
I said "Not today. I lost my appetite.
Theres two cats in my belly and they want to fight."
I was suckin on a Rolaid and a Tums or two,
When I swear I heard it mew, boy.
And that is when I knew,

Theres a cat in the kettle at the Peking Moon
I think I gotta stop eatin there at noon.
They say that its beef or fish or pork
But its purrin there on my fork.
Theres a hair-ball on my fork.

I hate to say it but after reading about what was supposedly processed chicken in China actually being fox and/or rat , well, I pitched it. In all honesty I think it's some sort of textured meat protein but dang it, it shouldn't be labeled beef!

It's one of about a million songs online that is credited to Weird Al but isn't actually by Weird Al. It's by a group called Bob Rivers Comedy Corp.

Yep....I'm very familiar with Bob Rivers, I've got a boatload of his/their stuff somewhere on the computer. The Weird Al credit just got cut and pasted along with the lyrics.

Speaking of Bob....here's one of my favorites. This one goes out to all the guys and gals shopping the LaGrange Walmart. 8) . :|

Yuk! :P In fairness, though, that's in China. Here I think it's much more likely that they are either using a soy-based substitute or some kind of meat-loafy thing.

Well, I agree about that. At least, that's what I am telling myself.
