Special brunches or events for Mother's Day

by Robin Garr » Tue Apr 29, 2014 11:58 am

I'm not getting a lot of notices about events for Mother's Day, which kind of hides behind Derby until it pops up on us the Monday after the First Saturday in May. It's probably time to put up a topic to accommondate announcements, though.

Restaurateurs, chefs, staff or fans, feel free to post Mother's Day events here without the usual permission-in-advance requirement. I do ask, as usual for these things, that you purge your announcement of PR hype and superlatives before posting, and change the subject line above your post to reflect the restaurant involved.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

Re: Special brunches: West Baden Springs Hotel

by RichardM » Wed Apr 30, 2014 9:13 am

Earlier this week Suzi and I were in French Lick for business and got to stay at West Baden Springs Hotel. Once you have been there, you can understand why in the 20's & 30's it was so popular with the crime families and politicians. Updated to the 21st century it is simply amazing. And, one of the most amazing parts is the dining. It is worth the drive, like going to Brown County on Thanksgiving to dine at the B & B there. This is a very special brunch for you to take your mother to. Worth the time to drive there. URL AT END

Re: Special brunches or events for Mother's Day

by Sara R » Tue May 13, 2014 2:05 pm

After viewing the special offerings presented, we decided on Corbett's for our celebration. We had never been before and were excited to try such a highly regarded restaurant. Suffice it to say, we were extremely disappointed. The service was shockingly poor and the portion sizes were laughable.

I started with the biscuit and gravy and I was presented with a 1.5'' diameter biscuit with their version of "gravy" on top. I would have described it as chili since it had an overabundance of cumin and was brown in color. My shrimp and grits entree had a total of 4 measly shrimp and maybe 1/3 cup of grits. I cleaned my plate in no more than 6 bites. My banana foster pancake dessert consisted of 4 previously cooked (literally could not cut through them with the provided knife) silver dollar pancakes with maybe 6 slivers of banana on top.

As far as the service goes, we were never offered one of the included beverages (coffee, tea, soda); we were simply presented with water. We were never offered the selection of mini muffins and baked goods that were presented to the surrounding tables. We had to ask if there was a reason we were skipped as our perfectly clean bread plates and butter knives were being removed from our table. When our dessert was served, we were not given any silverware with which to eat it and we sat at our table staring at our plates for close to 10 minutes before our waitress returned to check on us.

Was that worth $35 each?! I certainly can't imagine how.

I'm really sorry you had a bad experience, Sara. Corbett's does have a great reputation, and I'm surprised and disappointed to read your report. :(

I believe this happens there when they tried to stretch their limit and do brunches like this for special occasions. We've also had what I would call a mediocre experience there when attending a brunch so that's what I attributed it to. We've been there other times eating off the regular menu and have had an excellent experience.
