15Thousand Farmers Launches Mondo Tomato Challenge at 15th Day Events

15Thousand Farmers will host two events on Tuesday, April 15, for the kickoff of The Mondo Mater Giant Tomato Challenge.

The event challenges Louisville and surrounding areas to grow the largest tomato by weight, to be judged at our August 2014 15th Day event. The Mondo Mater Giant Tomato Challenge is designed to dare novice urban farmers to get their hands dirty, learn more about healthy food growing and urban farming as well as spur veteran and once again urban farmers to match tomato growing prowess! Prizes will be awarded in various categories in addition to the overall heaviest tomato.

The 15Thousand Farmers Breakfast will be at the Café on Brent, 712 Brent St., on April 15 from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m., and The 15Thousand Farmers Happy Hour will be 5:30- 6:30 p.m. at Spring Street Bar and Grill, 300 S. Spring St.

Advice and growing tips for tomato tending in patio containers, in raised beds and in the ground will be provided by 15Thousand Farmers’ Dirt Card Partners Fresh Start Growers and New Earth Organics. Dirt Card Partners are local businesses that give discounts or other incentives to 15Thousand members. Dirt Cards are free as are 15Thousand Farmer memberships.

Each 15th day, 15Thousand Farmers sponsors an event where urban farmers gather to network, learn, ask questions, and to share plants, seeds, and produce. 15Thousand Farmers helps create, empower, and inspire 15thousand new, sustainable, backyard/front yard farmers in Louisville, KY to feed their families and themselves! How? By using simple and easy instructions, checklists, materials and ongoing support provided through local growers and resources that will provide everything needed to start growing food in our yards, on decks, or in community gardens.

For more information on urban farming and food growing visit us at http://15thousandfarmers.com to learn more about square foot gardening. Join us as we learn to grow our own healthy food and grow the sense of community in our neighborhoods. 15 Thousand Farmers was designed to be an organization where anyone can meet and eat with neighbors around a common interest – sharing growing secrets, reclaiming unused spaces for growing, trading special vegetables or herbs and seeds! As we grow our own food, we begin to realize we have a choice to take charge of things we hold dear – abundant, inexpensive, delicious, nutritious sustainable food, sharing it with friends, saving money we usually spend at the grocery, reconnecting with nature just outside our back door, making new friends in our neighborhood with a common interest, and helping transform this community and the world.

Find 15Thousand Farmers at the Mighty Kindness Hootenanny Waterfront Park Saturday April 26, 2014 and at the Louisville Free Public Library Downtown Branch “How To” Festival Saturday, May 10 2014.
