I found this article helpful. Something else I would like to be educated on (never having worked in a restuarant) is what if any rules apply to sharing of tips with other restaurant personnel by the wait staff (or the person who takes your money if you are getting carryout). If you get especially good service by someone who is not your server, should you tip them directly? Tell your server to give to that person? I have always wondered but this recently came up when a person pouring water took the initiative to correct a problem that my waiter shrugged off.
