Heine Bros at Eastern Parkway becoming Comfy Cow

by MarieP » Mon Mar 03, 2014 6:21 pm

OK, the key is to keep Louisville WEIRD, but not make it INSANE!

There is a busy bus stop across the street from Heine Bros. I've gone, and I've seen others go, across the intersection to get a hot drink while waiting. The place is packed every time. We don't need more ice cream there, even if it's Comfy Cow. I can't imagine why they would close!

It sure seemed popular, Marie! On the other hand, they've got three branches within a ridiculously short distance on Bardstown Road, from Longest to Eastern Parkway to Douglass. It kind of makes sense to dump the middle one, especially with plans afoot to renovate the original Heine's location at Longest, which is just a few blocks away.

Now there will be a Comfy Cow, a fro-yo place, and Ce Fiore on three of the four corners there.

Without trying to be mean to frozen yogurt places or Ce Fiore, I think Comfy Cow ice cream is in a different universe than frozen yogurt.

Okay, rumor mongers. For your non-Highlands-centric information, there are two Heine Bros. on Eastern Parkway. I have been walking to the "other" one regularly since I hurt my back to get myself moving. I thought this was an announcement that "my" Heine Bros. was closing. A Comfy Cow would be nice, but I'd hate to see my waist line if i was heading to Comfy Cow several times a week.

One of the baristas at Frankfort Ave. Heine's also told Mary that they're going to renovate soon. Makes me curious what they've got in mind. One obvious guess is that they buy the Caspian Grill (former Greek Flew By Night) space next door to double the footprint. I hope they don't turn in into something modern and Starbucky, but more space and front and side doors better equipped to keep the warm in and the heat out would be very welcome. Oh, yeah, and bring the WiFi into the 21st century, please? 8)

That would be nice. I guess the Caspian Grill is already done?

No, it's there, open, running at low volume.

My opinion, more intuitive than factual, is that Aziz, the owner, really does not want to be running a restaurant. He wants to lease the space. But he's had a hard time finding a long-term tenant. The Wine Rack was so successful that it quickly moved to larger quarters down the street. Conez and Coneyz was fun but never attained critical mass. And the Greek place literally flew by night, leaving him holding the tattered remains of a broken lease. That was when he opened his own place. But my GUESS is that he would give it over in a minute, apparently in favor of what would look like a very long-term agreement or maybe even a sale.

As long as they don't paint the outside of the building pink, I'm all for it.

I always though this was HB's flagship location so I was surprised to hear about them closing. I did hear from a former employee, though, that this was their least profitable shop.

This is a relatively recent addition, Richard. The Longest Avenue one is the original.

(Hard to keep track when there are so many locations on Bardstown Road, I know.)
