502 Restaurant Week: How much Value, really?

by Adrian Baldwin » Wed Feb 19, 2014 11:38 am

502 Restaurant Week begins today. Seems to have more participation each year...

The $50 per couple places seem like really good deals, which is supposed to be the idea.

...the $50 per person places seem like a sham to me, though. Okay, maybe that's a harsh way to put it, but I'm having trouble seeing the value.

You can eat at most ANY of these places except for maybe Morton's or Oakroom for under $100 -- even with an appetizer & dessert & a glass of wine in most cases ----> and have the ENTIRE menu at your disposal instead of 3 choices or their pre-set menus.

Don't really see the "value", which is supposed to be what 'restaurant week' is all about, for people to try new places they normally can't justify. At least, that's how it's presented & executed in NYC, Chicago, etc in my experience.

Am I off base here?

We're going to do the $50 couples dinner at Porcini tonight, so we'll see.

I was looking for an excuse to go back to 1860, but I priced out their $50 option that I would have gotten (arugula salad, lobster hush puppy, scottish salmon and desert) and the cost would have come to about $45 per item :?

Exactly.

We're heading to Volare Friday, but I emailed them to make sure the "regular" menu will be available, and it will.

We'll be able to order anything we want, an appetizer, and a couple of drinks...and still come in below the $100 per couple limited "restaurant week" menu.

It was a pretty good value at Porcini. $50 for two 3-course meals. The portions were smaller than normal, but still big enough to fill us up and probably the size that should normally be served. Somehow I ended up getting Sierra Nevada for $2.50 a bottle, which is a steal, but Makers/Cokes were $8.50.

Bruschetta Trio - least favorite dish of the night. Bread was too thick and all three pcs. needed acid. (6/10)

Caesar Salad - standard Caesar. (8/10)

Salmone Alla Griglia - very nice and light dish (8/10)

Filetto Peppe Nero - perfectly cooked and very flavorful (9/10)

Italiano Torta di Crema (10/10)

Tiramisu (10/10)

^ Agree.

As I said, the $50 per COUPLE restaurants seem to have the right idea.

It's the $100 per couple menus that I don't necessarily see any value in
