wine sale / party mart st matthews is closing

by Joel F » Wed Feb 12, 2014 12:59 pm

11am - 7pm

Ten years ago we opened this location in St. Matthews because there was a vast wine wasteland between St. Matthews and Middletown. At the time there were 3 nearby wine shops in the area. Today there are 10 with more on the way. So, we are closing the doors of the Party Mart Outlet Store in the old Sears building, but I have quite a bit of great value wine at even greater prices that I must get rid of. If you have been here before you know our Outlet prices already reflect a 30% or more discount.
Starting today we are marking down all of our remaining wine an additional 20%!

(apparently listed the wrong website, sorry)

I don't think that link is the right website.

Apparently Party Mart, the Louisville wine shop, doesn't have a website - at least, not that I can find on Google - but they (the main branch on Brownsboro) do have a Facebook page:

Can restaurants buy any of this or do they gave to go through a distributor? Don't have a restaurant. Just curious.

We cannot. We have to go through our distributor or ABC will crush us.

While this "tilt" by ABC is based largely on the national and regional wine and liquor wholesalers' deep-pocketed industry lobby, it should also be noted that the 30% savings off retail that Party Mart is offering is actually less of a discount than the routine wholesaler-to-retailer/restaurant pricing. What looks like a deal to us may not look like as big a deal to a vendor who buys wholesale.

That would depend on the amount of wine that each is buying from the distributor. Typically they more you buy, the cheaper it is, so Party Mart might actually be cheaper for a restaurant. Not that I'm advocating crossing the 3 tier system mind you

Do you occasionally get audited and have to prove where you purchased your alchol?

Any audits of those records are reactionary and fueled by a complaint. Normally it is for an item not normally distributed in the state. They ask to see an invoice from a distributor for the item. If one can't be produced, they can confiscate the item and issue a big fine.

I can not speak for on premise but for retail stores, there is some special considerations allowed for a closing store. We have bought out inventory of a couple of stores that are closing. Both were in our county and we paid well under "wholesale" price for the remaining inventory.

Generally loss leaders or selling under cost is prohibited with alcohol in Kentucky. But in the case of a store closing or an item being discontinued, a retailer can sell for under cost.

It's definitely a "rolls yer dice and takes yer chances" kind of gamble. Much like skirting the Health Code. You only have to store food 6" off the floor when the inspector shows up and can store the bleach above the mornay after she's gone, but why risk it?

ABC is brutal and takes no prisoners. My alcohol sales are too good to risk on paying a few dollars less on a case of liquor.

Just not worth it.

With on premise, a dollar or two a bottle isn't going to make a difference regardless of legality.
