Thai Noodles

by Ron H » Thu Jan 16, 2014 3:45 pm

Well, Thai Smile 5 is no longer a thing. I'm not sure if anyone's been by there recently, but Thai Smile 5 is gone and Thai Noodles has taken its place. I've been there... three or four times since the ownership changed, and I have to say it might be better than ever.

It's hard to fault the old Thai Smile, but their specials weren't terribly inventive (lots of pineapple whatever going on). Now, I don't even think I've ordered my pad kee mow once. One time there was a special dish made with udon noodles rather than traditional thai flat noodles (that was excellent). The new owner's name is Jesse, and it looks like another family affair as at various times his wife or his mother have been in the kitchen when we've eaten there (if you can figure out when his mom cooks, let me know because she crushed it).

One of the recent specials was the Bangkok combo with a bowl of soup as a starter and a coconut milk ice cream and fried banana dessert. The coconut milk ice cream is homemade (and delicious), as are the banana pastry puffs. Every time I've gotten the special, I've left stuffed to the gills and thrilled with my choice.

Thanks for bringing that up, Ron. We did have a little discussion of the Thai Smile 5 > Thai Noodles move last month, but I realize now that it was buried in an older thread and didn't pop up as its own thing. For your reference, here's a link to the new part of the old thread, but I appreciate your review, which brings in a lot of new info.

Yeah, I totally missed that (and I'm really sad about the sweet lady from Thai Smile 5 moving, but I'm glad to hear they're still doing well).

I'm just glad to see that Thai Whatever seems to have remained kind of a family-run establishment, and it's nice to see them experimenting with different kinds of noodle dishes without straying too far away from the stuff I'd consider Thai standards. The udon dish was I think the pad kee mow basil sauce, but the different noodle gave it a completely different mouth feel that really made a difference. It ended up being a good spin on a traditional taste.

So I pulled up the link to their website to find their address and saw the slide show of dishes. Wow! Everything looked great. Then I got to the photo of the pineapple dish. Uhhhh, was that a deep fried chicken foot? Because it sure looked like it.
