Good Sushi?

by Jason G » Fri Jan 03, 2014 12:38 pm

Any sushi lovers on here? I don't eat the stuff myself but my wife loves it and i would like to take her to a sushi dinner for her birthday. What is the best/hippest sushi place right now? ( I realize those are mutually exclusive. :D )

There are several, but when the dust settles I believe you will find Oishii the winner!

http://www.oishiisushiky.com

I also tried the new one (Ginza), and it was very good. (9420 Shelbyville Road).

Nope I'm down for any area. Weve been to sapporo, hikoamon, sakura blue (not sure if that is the right name...was in st. matthews by the post office.), i think shes been to Caviar downtown if that is still even there.

I was just wondering what is at the top of the pack these days. I'll check out these suggestions.

Jason, Sapporo on Bardstown is always a contendah, although not everyone loves its noisy, high-industrial-tech atmosphere. I also like to give props to Tokyo on Lime Kiln (Holiday Manor area between 22 and 42), which is small and not particularly atmospheric, but family-run by real sushi experts who often have unusual ingredients like (ankimo) and sea urchin (uni).

Asahi in St Matthews (near Lotsa Pasta) has another "name" sushi chef.

Hiko-A-Mon in Westport Village, Sake Blue in Fern Creek and Hanabi in Prospect are all fancy, upscale, but maybe better to experience the art of the sushi roll than more traditional stuff.

Dragon King's Daughter (Bardstown Road and New Albany) carries on the spirit of Maido, but maybe as much for Japanese food in general as sushi in particularl.

And I've been hearing a lot about Ginza (Shelbyville Road at Hurstbourne, although the fact of it being tri-ethnic doesn't really inspire me.

There's my $0.02 worth, anyway ... I'm sure I have overlooked some good ones.

I have to vote for Kailana Sushi: http://www.kailanasushi.com/. It's my go to spot. If your wife is a traditionalist, their HUGE rolls might raise an eyebrow (as I understand it, most purists prefer a "one bite" roll). I think they're an excellent value because the rolls are so large. My favorites are the poison spider and yellowtail special rolls. They also have some pretty creative rolls (one of the newer ones has a blueberry sauce on it  ).

They have a nice set of lunch specials as well. The fish is always extremely fresh. The people are also very friendly. When I'm not in a sushi mood (rarely), the hibachi grill is decent (the yum yum sauce is addictive).

I rank Kailana up there with Oishii. I also enjoyed Rikishi out in Crestwood Station. Sake Blue is good, but tends to the more pricey side.

Thanks for the testimony, Terri! I hadn't found that one yet!

Just out of curiosity, looking at the map, isn't it really close to Sake Blue?

It's maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile away from Sake Blue. I live in Fern Creek, and my money goes to Kailana most of the time. That particular location has been a "kiss of death" spot in the past (several BBQ and fish places disappeared in rapid succession), but Kailana seems to be holding on (it's been open for at least 2 years, maybe more since I am a more recent convert). It's much more casual than Sake Blue which works for me when I'm hankering for a quick sushi lunch.

Hiko is the boss. You should probably try his place.

Hiko will be second on my list.

The Basil Duck from the Thai menu was fantastic.
