El Taco Luchador Tacqueria

by Deb Hall » Mon Dec 30, 2013 11:51 pm

Brian, Aiden and I were excited to be at the soft opening for Cristina and Fernando Martinez' newest venture this evening, and it was everything we anticipated. The brightly painted exterior is a fun addition to the neighborhood. The format is QSR; the menu was tacos, tortas and sides ( some desserts will be available soon).

We started with an order of their excellent chips and guacamole. Between us, we tried most of the tacos which were both great, and cheap ( $2-$2.50 each). Our favorites were the Chicken mole, chicharrons, and barbacoa. Our 9 year old finished his carnitas and barbacoa tacos in record time, and declared them " my best tacos ever" . Brian and I both then ordered tortas- the number #11 and the Desayuno. These great sandwiches were large with loads of flavor. My Desayuno was the hands-down favorite, and wonderfully messy filled with bacon, smoked ham, fried egg, chorizo and condiments. We left overly stuffed and very happy.

They open to the public on January 1st. I suggest heading over soon, between the great food and great prices , I'm betting they will be slammed soon.

Deb, did you happen to notice if they had made the restaurant accessible? Lil-Cheezers didn't bother making the simple modification required to provide access from the street. It would be quite simple and relatively inexpensive to make this location accessible.

I stopped by there last night to get a carry out menu (it will be a constant lunch spot no doubt) and they gave me a couple of tacos. I LOVED them. Great flavors, each one had a distinct personality (I had the carne asada, barbacoa, and carnitas). The only problem they will eventually have is that it will probably get so packed in there similar to a stock trader pit. I saw pics of "mole fries" and heard about fresh churros.. droooool.. Can't wait!

They officially opened today and in just about 12 minutes when they opened the door there was a line that started to creep out to the sidewalk. But they held it together and despite getting slammed so quickly the food came out in a decent amount of time with no mishaps. Aaaaaaand it was fantastic.

Think santa fe prices with guaca-mole/mussel burger bar quality. Or as the kids would say, "Stupid good".

Went by today and grabbed three tacos to try. Awesome!
The fish was the best by far. The carnitas was a little on the tough side. But everything was flavored and seasoned perfectly (I cant stand chefs who've forgotten how to salt and pepper their dishes properly).
And best of all very affordable.

When I dont feel like waiting till 7 or 8pm for the taco trailer on New LaGrange road or driving out that far...I will be eating here a bunch!
I eat, therefore I am.

Love the Tortas

by Iggy C » Sun Jan 05, 2014 9:54 am

My wife and I went by yesterday and were very pleased. I got three tacos (carnitas, fish and al pastor) and thought they were pretty good -- carnitas and cod being best, and al pastor being generic fried pork with pineapple, so a bit disappointed with that one. The two salsas were strong as well -- an arbol chile one and that creamy oil-based jalapeno kind. Tortillas weren't nearly as good as Chapinlandia -- a bit thin and not particularly corny. But given that the tacos are reasonably-priced and all the taquerias I like (except El Camino) are far away, I was already happy with Luchador.

The carnitas torta, however, was a stand-out, mainly because of the high-quality toasted bread. This was as good as any torta I've had in Kentucky, and at a good price. We will definitely be regular Luchador customers based on the tortas alone.
