Moby Dick on Mellwood

by Adam C » Fri Dec 20, 2013 10:33 am

My buddy told me yesterday that it is gone. A pile of rubble. Anyone know anything?

That's it. A pile of rubble. Here two days ago, gone yesterday. Saw it with my own eyes on the way home yesterday.

The building was for sale for almost a decade. I guess someone finally bought it and took it out. Moby Dick seemed to do alright in the spot. Anybody know the deeper story here?

Making way for the new I-64 interchange there. They are toying with the idea of making Mellwood or Story two way traffic from what I heard several months back.

Why? WHY? I like my Story Ave/Mellwood the way it is! The madness must stop! I agree with Will, somebody slap some history all over that spot! I hear George Washington slept there...

Did you say Moby Dick, ya scurvy dog?

“Cannibals? Who is not a cannibal? I tell you it will be more tolerable for the Fejee that salted down a lean missionary in his cellar against a coming famine; it will be more tolerable for that provident Fejee, I say, in the day of judgement, than for thee, civilized and enlightened gourmand, who nailest geese to the ground and feastest on their bloated livers in thy pate de fois gras.
― Herman Melville, Moby Dick

I believe the Moby Dick on Southside Drive also closed shop. I know it was also for sale for a while, I wonder if the same person/group owned both?

I believe Moby Dick, a local chain, retains ownership of the properties rather than franchising them out, but even as I type this I realize that I actually don't know for sure.

Robin, I think you are correct about MOST of the Moby Dick stores being owned by the same family. A few years ago there were a couple of "franchises" in the mix who were owned by non-family members. I believe the Jeffersonville store is one of those but I can't swear to that.

It looks like a convenience store is going to be built here. Here's a link to the construction permit that was issued by the city.

http://portal.louisvilleky.gov/codesandregs/permit/detail?type=BUILDING&id=13BL5576

Also, I asked a co-worker involved in the bridges project if the demolition had anything to do with the downtown crossing. He said he doesn't think so. The current plans don't show eastbound I-64 being widened on the east side of Mellwood Avenue, nor are any changes to the ramp from Mellwood Avenue to eastbound I-64 planned.

Aha! I sure didn't think that was right, but kept my mouth shut because plans do change. Thanks!
