German Kuchen

by Todd Antz » Thu Dec 19, 2013 5:01 pm

For years, we've had a family tradition of two different styles of German-style kuchen with our Christmas morning breakfast. We would always have a cherry one, and what we referred to as the "dust bowl", a cinnamon-sugar kuchen. We had a go-to bakery in downtown Jeffersonville, but it closed down a few years ago. We have not had any luck with any other bakeries for these traditional desserts since we lost our original bakery. Some have come close, some not close at all.

So, does anyone have a recommendation on where I could get these before Christmas?

Todd, I don't know for certain, but I would guess that Louisville's old family German bakeries would offer your best shot. Nord's, maybe Plehn's? Isn't there still a Heitzmann's left, out Shelbyville Road around Hurstbourne?

Heitzmann's advertises them, or butter kuchen at least:

Plehn's does a very good butter kuchen. I seem to remember a cinnamon sugar crumble one as well.

Me too! And the most awesome ice cream in the world, for ridiculous low prices! (That's probably why they went out of business ... )

There's also a Heitzmann's Pink Box on Eastern, near Preston, by the Schnitzelburg Heine Brothers. I have no idea why there are so many Heitzmann's who aren't affiliated with one another, but that's one, too. Same as Shelbyville and Hurstbourne AFAIK.

Family squabble. It happens.

Certainly possible, but I thought the deal with Heitzmann's was that the original owners died or retired, and the younger generation didn't want to keep the business, so they closed most but sold a couple of properties to the people who'd managed them. Or something like that.
