Double Dragon on Poplar Level

by MarieP » Thu Dec 05, 2013 2:04 am

I hate to write a negative review, but the experience a friend and I recently had compels me to write one!

My friend and I get together once a week and have takeout- for the longest time it was Shiraz, which is where I think we will choose now. About a month ago, though she hadn't been to Double Dragon in a long while, we decided to try it again. We did, and we were pleasantly surprised, particularly since the last time she went was underwhelming. I had shrimp egg foo young, which was flavorful from both the eggs and the shrimp. She had beef and broccoli, which was tender and savory. The next week, I tried the cashew chicken, which was an excellent blend of juicy white chicken, crunchy cashews, and all kinds of Chinese veggies. I ordered the same the next week and was satisfied, but the beef and broccoli my friend got was tough. She tried Double Dragon again a few days later for lunch, but her wonton soup was very doughy.

Today, we were talking about where to pick something up, and I said Double Dragon, thinking my cashew chicken would be good yet again (she was planning on eating something from her own kitchen). I was wrong! The chicken was a grayish color and was very chewy and stringy. My friend called it "chicken remnants." She called the restaurant, and we were told we could bring the food back to exchange it. We took it back, and I showed the man at the counter the meal. I told him the chicken was not good, and he said, "Oh, you want white meat!" I said yes, and I ordered moo goo gai pan. When we got back to my friend's house, she and I both tried a bite- it was just as bad! The mushrooms were good, but the chicken looked and tasted like chicken skin! We didn't call the restaurant back- perhaps I should have, but by that time I'd lost my appetite.

We will be voting with our feet, however... the place had a long line when we went, but if they keep this up, I predict there won't be one for long!

Maybe it was "white slime" lol... I don't know, but my digestive system was making noises about it- it still doesn't feel quite right- yuck!

How funny! My husband and I ordered take out from there last week and we had a negative experience too! We had never been before and, after hearing positive feedback, decided to try it.

I tried the egg drop soup and it had absolutely no taste whatsoever. If I had been blindfolded and fed the soup, I honestly would have had no idea what I was eating. I also ordered General Tso's chicken and it was cloyingly sweet. It tasted like someone dumped a jar of jelly over fried chicken. My husband's pork dish had such a strange texture that he just threw it away. He wouldn't even give it to our dogs!

They gave us a dish we hadn't ordered (and charged us for it, too) in our package which we didn't want. We didn't notice until we got home and checked the receipt more closely.

DD (aka TEN MINUTES!) used to be a go to for me when friends lived across the street on Goss but now I only go there for fried dumplings due to my last experience which wasn't great. But the dumplings still slay..

Their crab rangoons are really good. Theirs are much lighter and crabbier than most places.

Wow, we've been customers for years and almost always have a better-than-average meal. Hate to hear this. I wonder if they are going through a management change or something.

Annnnnnnd, now I want Chinese food.
