Pizza Hut Manager fired for refusing to open on Thanksgiving

Wish there were more people out there with the stones to take this kind of stand. BTW, as a reminder, Pizza Hut is owned by YUM brands.

Thanksgiving is becoming less and less of traditional holiday when it comes to the private sector. Soon it will simply be a bank holiday. Office/government/financial workers will be off, everyone else will be working.

When you work in the restaurant/hospitality business, working nights and holidays is par for the course.

People are piling on Yum brands for this but nearly 100% of companies would have done the same thing.

Eric, not to pick on you or your remarks....but rather just as a general rant on the subject.

This as the result of a bunch of greedy corporations (and shareholders)...and a few "shoppers" who have little regard for their fellow man. The CJ (as but one example) in one of their "poll" questions asked if people were planning on shopping on Thanksgiving...4% of the people said "yes" and a whopping 94% said no...What needs to happen is for the 94% to start belittling these greedy bastards AND the other "4%" who actually shop on Thanksgiving. I'll start. If anyone reading this is a 4 percent-er you should be ASHAMED...Your lust for the almighty "deal" will personally help ruin the holiday for hundreds.

One of the reasons I get so spooled up about this subject is that there are -thousands- of people out there who -do- have to work the holiday...policemen, firemen, metro-safe, etc... As a (former) air traffic controller I personally worked 25 straight Thanksgivings...10 hour shifts, so that I could do my part to help people get "home" to spend some time with friends and family...So I -know- what it's like not to spend Thanksgiving with my loved ones...And the thought that someone is not going to be able to enjoy some "family time" just because of some greedy corporation or some thoughtless jackass who wants to score a deal on a big screen TV really pisses me off.

No doubt about it...but by the same token there are lines that need to be drawn and IMHO this is one of them. We all have our little "hot" buttons and this just happens to be one of mine.

Personally I never miss an opportunity to pile on YUM Brands...or WalMart.

Many of whose executives are (or. at least, have been in the past) rather visibly associated with a large mega-church on the eastern edge of the Metro.

I find myself allied with Steve P. on this issue (and another one today no less)! It's a Thanksgiving miracle!

For what it's worth, J. Gumbo's closes on Thanksgiving, and my store on UL campus will be closed until Sunday.

My daughter is a Hooters girl, and has to work Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm mad about that, but I also feel badly for anyone whose holiday dinner consists of places like Hooters, Pizza Hut, etc.

I go to southeast and will not be shopping on Thursday or going to any restaurant. My choice of churches has nothing to do with my feelings that employees should have the day off with their families.

That's not what I'm saying at all, Megan.

I'm saying that Yum's top execs are known as church-goers, but their actions don't seem to reflect what I assume they are hearing from the pulpit about treating others right. I'm not sure how you turned that into an attack on Southeast. 'splain?

Unless I'm mistaken, they no longer let the Boy Scouts of America meet there either, so that says quite a bit about any sort of tolerance doesn't it?

Further response to Megan: Here's what I posted on the Pizza Hut Facebook page. No response yet, but it's early.

Trying to be respectful here, Wikipedia tells us that Yum Brands Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David C. Novak is a Christian and has been a member of Southeast Christian church. I would be very interested to hear Mr. Novak's comment as to whether this corporate policy is consistent with any theological formation he might receive at his place of worship.

All I know is if my kid was forced to be a Cub Scout member and meet there, he'd be following a different golden rule.

Pizza Hut reinstates manager fired after refusing to open Thanksgiving

After being fired for refusing to open his restaurant on Thanksgiving, a Pizza Hut manager has his job back.

Tony Rohr, who worked his way up from cook to general manager at the company, was told it was mandatory to keep his Elkhart, Ind., store open on the holiday.

"I just decided I wasn't going to agree to it," Rohr said. "All of these people the whole year had been told they were going to have the day off."

Luckily for him, Pizza Hut stepped in and "strongly recommended" that the local franchise hire him back, saying the company respects "an employee's right to not work on a holiday."
