A new place just opened up next to the Stoney Brook Kroger called Sam's Gyro. It's located one door down from where Thai Orchids used to be. It was a Papa Murphy's outpost in its last incarnation.
Colleen and I stopped in this weekend after grocery shopping and both of us were very pleased with our lunch.
We both had a gyro and for sides she had rice and I had tabbouleh. Both of our gyros were literally stuffed with what I'd estimate to be close to a pound of gyro meat. They did have the ubiquitous cone spinning around but they had some served us some that they had pre-sliced in a steam well for quick service. I also liked that they offered lots of toppings aka Subway style for your sandwich that included feta, olives, cucumbers, lettuce, jalapeños, banana peppers, the tabbouleh and a hot version of Tzatiki sauce. They also had the usual menu items you would expect at a place like this including falafel , kebobs and a quail dish that looked interesting. The tabbouleh was very fresh with the right balance of lemon and oil. Colleen enjoyed her yellow rice so much that I got some more to serve with the fish I was making for dinner that night.
The only real knock I have is the decor of the place;due to the fact that they combined furnishings and equipment from what looked like a Quiznos and a Chinese buffet that looked a little worn. But that certainly didn't affect the friendly service and the tasty eats at a very reasonable tariff.
I'm looking forward to eating my way through the menu.
