Here is a good link listing items you should carry during the winter months:

Local weather men and women are so desperate for something to report and some shocking way to reel us into their "weather forecasting" and coverage that they jump upon the slightest hint of anything that's not a sunny sky (and even then "deadly heat wave! Make sure your children and elderly are safe!") and turn it into the most life threatening event in history. They have everyone jumping at weather shadows and rarely existent spectres of what could be serious weather events. And heaven forbid real weather does happen, like the tornado in Henryville, as it only fuels the fire and proves that their weather terrorism is justified.
We now cancel school and even holidays on the potential threat of weather that might come near our region. Ludicrous! I'm all for erring on the side of caution, but too much is enough!
In related news, cars on my street go too fast, kids' music these days is too loud, and stuff costs more than it used to!

I spent 25 years working right along-side forecasters from the National Weather Service...They were then and they are now without a doubt the best weather professionals anywhere.
