the original is on the 400 blk of W. Oak St. I have just been there once but it was good. They are small $1.00 servings. I saw thier truck parked in that lot a few weeks ago, so this is why. :)

I finally got over to Southern Express last night and am very glad I did. They've got a simple menu and great value. My son had a large chicken leg, collard greens and soda. I had a chicken breast, greens, mac&cheese, corn bread and soda. Our bill was $8.48! And the food was very good!

Robin, I mentioned it in the text of another post several weeks ago and I've been a half dozen times with a mixed bag of goodness. I'm tired from work, but here's the deal. The recipes are good, the portions are small, but for a buck I usually get a double order of one side or another. The up side is usually up when they aren't real busy and have a all the entrees out on the steam table. They tend to run out of items pretty quickly. Another issue is Salt. I love salt and have a pretty high tolerance for it, but Soul Food can way overdue it on the greens and concentrated gravies that sit and cook on the steam table. Chicken, Pork-chops, Fish, Salisbury Steak, Sweet Potatoes, Mac&Cheese, Greens, Rice, Gumbo, etc... And while keeping all this in mind, it is still a DOLLAR for any Item including meat. I'll join in later if the post takes off. Peace. Bill.

I consider myself pretty well versed in the protein markets (I kind of have to be) and $1 any protein kind of scares me a little. I have a hard time trusting it.

I hope they are making it up in profits on things like greens and beans...

I've tried Southern Express. Like others, the $1 concept was a bit mind-boggling. Yes, the portions are small, but one can load up as much of the meat or veggies as one likes and still get out on the cheap.

I tried the fish and was pleased with it. My partner had the fried chicken, and while the pieces were small, the breading and the seasoning were good. Is it gourmet (or gourmet southern)? Nope, but it scratches a soul food itch that can't be scratched in the eastern end of town.

Like any other steam table/meat & 3 type restaurant, one's experience will depend on what's available and how long the food has been on the table.

I would dearly love to have a truly old school meat & 3 in the Fern Creek/J-town corridor. About as close as I can come to that in Fern Creek is ordering the veggie plate at Smokehouse BBQ. I'm unsure why nobody wants to bring a soul food/home cooking operation to this neck of the woods. Sometimes all a girl wants is some fried catfish with mac & cheese or meatloaf and mashed potatoes from scratch!

I really think a good Meat & 3 would be welcome almost any place in Louisville!
