Christie's Cafe in Valley Station

by Dan Thomas » Fri Oct 25, 2013 3:07 pm

The much maligned and almost non existent Way South End dining scene has a hidden gem I've discovered. Christie's Cafe is serving some mighty fine diner/ home cooked favorites WAY out on Dixie HWY south of the Snyder. I've been calling on them for my job and I can attest that they have a really nice operation out there. While it's nothing fancy, they do serve some really good grub at a really fair tariff. So if you find your way heading out to Knob Creek to shoot up some junk cars or are heading to Ft Knox and are looking for a bite, I highly recommend! I would put them almost on par, but just a small notch below, of what you would find at Shady Lane Cafe. :D

Thanks Dan. I will check it out soon. I love discovering new places at reasonable prices. Speaking of which, have you checked out Soul Food Express in Hikes Point. Where everything, Fried Chicken, Smothered Pork Chops, Greens, Mac & Cheese, etc. etc. is ONLY 1 DOLLAR! Anyway thanks for the tip and look forward to trying it.

It's a solid place, for sure...

...but I put it a notch below Frontier Diner, if you're looking for comfort food. For my money, Frontier is the best Diner in town.

Also, 'Kathy & Joe's Place' on Valley Station Rd (formerly Mr. Lou's) has one of the better burgers I've had in this town.

Concur, or at least competitive with favorites like Shady Lane, which is sort of a diner I gave Frontier a good review in 2012 and would go back in a heartbeat.

In regards to driving down Dixie toward Ft Knox, I would recommend stopping in West Point and checking out the Star Cafe. It's only open Thursday-Sunday in the old West Point Hotel. The owner is super friendly, and her food is all homemade (she doesn't have a deep fryer). I always like places that have chalkboard menus (but there's also a printed menu for dishes available every day).

I've never checked out Christie's Cafe because if I'm in that area, I'm going to Star Cafe.

We all have our favorites! It's just neat to start talking about a different part of town. But I will stand by my recommendation over any thing else out that way. Could be a great idea for a story for one of the printed pubs.......Just sayin'

Been there a couple of times. It's not bad, but I would put them in the "Twig & Leaf" category ;not " Shady Lane" which is my local standard for very good, cheap & quick diner style/coffee shop cuisine...

Umm, Frontier Diner's food/menu/specials couldn't be *any* more different from Twig & Leaf. Twig & Leaf is a burgers & fries/greasy spoon-type of place, at least in my experience (which has never been for lunch, admittedly....just late night drunk food. :)

At a recent lunch at Frontier they had: Meatloaf, Pot Roast, Chicken Fried Chicken, Homemade Pot pie, Chicken & Dumplings, a list of at least 6-7 country style veggies/sides....among other things (regular diner fare).

That's consistent with my impression too, Adrian, but Dan sounded so confident that I assumed the Twig had changed since my last visit there. (It's not a place I hang out often, especially since management changed quite a few years ago.)

My wife and I stopped in at Frontier on Saturday and my impression was completely different than that. Although the food was fresh and well prepared it seemed the menu was limited to breakfast, burgers and a few sandwiches. We thought it was pretty good but because I don't eat beef there wasn't much to appeal to me.

Must be a weekday thing...

...or perhaps you missed the specials board, which is a big sharpie board over by the cash register?

They have anywhere from 4-6 specials written daily on it every time I'm in there, which again, is always during the week at lunch.

You're right. Totally mised the specials both times I've been there. Had a burger and a breakfast plate. Both were pretty good but given a choice, I prefer Christie's. Like I said, we all have a personal preference. It's just nice to find some decent options out that way.

No question...I enjoy Christie's as well.

And as I've mentioned several times, Pina Fiesta (in the old Tuscany location) on Dixie is my favorite all-around Mexican place in town.

They have your typical El Nopal'ish style menu......but then also a full Taqueria-style menu on the back page, which I always roll with.......Red/Green squirt bottles brought to the table with the meal....the works.

My Salmon was the strongest lemon-flavored fish I'd ever tasted, and wasn't a fan.

Went to Cristie's yesterday for a late breakfast (served all day) the country ham was pretty amazing in size and taste for Diner food. Everything was above par including the gravy, which is a pet peeve of mine, as most places use canned or a mix. This gravy tasted very close to my homemade gravy. Kudos on that. The girls, women, that work there could not have been nicer and more attentive and what a crowd for a Monday! A real bustling, community feeling and I will be back at some point for sure. Thanks to Dan for the shout out.
