ZAGAT's listing of best pizza in every state!

by Mark R. » Wed Oct 23, 2013 11:19 pm

Every time pizza comes up in a thread here it seems like everybody has their own personal favorite. Imagine trying to do that in every state across the nation! Well Zagat has tried to do that for a national pizza week article and here's the results: 50 States, 50 Pizzas. I've had several from different places on the list and they are good but....

By the way the one they list for Kentucky is from Impellizeri's.

Here's a direct link to the Kentucky/Impellizzeri's page:

http://www.zagat.com/b/50-state-50-pizz ... topbuzz#17

I dunno ... when we lived in NYC back in the '90s, serious foodies didn't put much credibility in Zagat, seeing it as a popularity poll mostly among "bridge and tunnel people" (like the Long Islander Zagats themselves) suburbanites who would be all over last year's favorite places in relatively accessible and perceived-as-safe neighborhoods, but unfailingly a year or two behind some trends while missing others entirely.

It might be different now that Zagat does near-national coverage. I know Dana McMahan is their correspondent here, and she's cool. But ... well, hey, I like Impellizzeri's, but the competition in this town is mighty keen!

You can't swing a dead cat in this town without hitting a pizza joint....most of it good, some of it VERY good. I'd certainly put Impellizerri's up there in that very good range.

Growing up, my parents always got the pizza they were known for: super thick slices, toppings a couple inches high. That's how I remember Impellizzeri's, from their little pizza parlor on Bardstown Road in the Highlands.

That's not the style of pizza I like at all, though. A few years ago, I was introduced to Impellizzeri's thin crust pizza, at their current Highlands location. I'm hooked on it. While they are not my favorite pizza purveyors in town, they are right up there and always solidly very good.

Did anyone else notice this?: If you to see what Georgia's "best" pizza tastes like, all you have to do is go to Mellow Mushroom in St. Matthew's and have their Holy Shiitake pie.

I'm just glad that they didn't choose Wick's  as KY's pizza representative.

Angio's (not Angilo's) rocks it pretty good..maybe not best in state, but probably best in Hikes Point/Buechel....plus it is right around the corner!
