by Robin Garr » Mon Oct 21, 2013 9:45 am

So, it will be a c- c- chain!?

W.W. Cousins headed to Outer Loop

After 30 years in operation, W.W. Cousins, a local burger restaurant, is adding a second location.

Matt Shaw, a licensee, plans to open a location at 4112 Outer Loop, in a location that previously housed a Buckhead Mountain Grill restaurant.

The renovations of the site began in the last few weeks, and Shaw hopes to have the restaurant open in early January, he said.

I heard about this months ago from my friends at Okolona FD, but since I saw no activity at the site kept it to myself. There has been lots of construction going on the last 2 weeks. We are anxious to add it to our Monday rotation (son is at Boy Scouts). :D

Until now I had assumed it was part of a chain.

Huh.

Aren't WW Cousins and Buckheads both part of the same, local family owned enterprise?

Nope, it's always been a free-stander. However, it was started by a couple of Louisville guys who had been execs in the Fuddrucker's chain, and was a dead ringer for the original. I never understood why they didn't get sued, but I can say that now, because I'm pretty sure the statute of limitations has run.

Carla, I never heard that, but that doesn't mean it isn't so. Correct answer is, "I don't know."

I'm pretty sure the original entrepreneur at Cousins was a guy named Peyton Wells, who I believe died several years ago.

I don't know anything about the restaurant connections, but I do know that Peyton Wells died a few years back.

Oopsie, we had a discussion on this back in August, and old dummy here completely forgot it. Apologies to Bryan Shepherd, who brought us the news a month and a half ago.

While their food is good, their present location seems like a dungeon when you go inside! Hopefully the new one will be a lot brighter. The concept is certainly very similar to Fuddruckers but IMHO isn't quite as well executed as the original.

I believe it was Dillan's steakhouse, which has been closed for some time, on hurstbourne next to buca di beppo that was associated with WW.

You are correct. Both Dillons and Cousins were started by members of the Wells family. I don't know if the ownership was exactly the same. Peyton Wells started Peytons, a drug supply company, that was later sold to Kroger for large bucks.

Kent Taylor was one of the original owners of Buckheads. He left there and started Texas Roadhouse. Mr Taylor is now the CEO of Texas Roadhouse, a public company with hundreds of locations. Also the owner of Aspen Creek in Fern Creek.

Agreed. Love the concept and the product, but the interior design creeps me out with the facacta trees and the odd layout. And that dessert area that is always dark and unused. Weird.
