Home Run Burgers ---Oysters

by BevP » Sun Oct 20, 2013 11:12 pm

I was on a Facebook forum, not a foodie forum and the subject turned to rolled oysters. I mentioned Home Run Burgers having them depending on the time of the year. This surprised a few folks. I explained the seafood connection, and one girl even mentioned how great the fish sandwiches are there. My question is when is the right time for the rolled oysters? Also, does Home Run still serve them...Kathy are you listening? There were several Home Run Burger fans on the forum I was on and happy to hear it was locally owned.

When I called about 3 weeks ago, I was informed that no location currently had oysters. I, too, would like to know if there is a set time for rolled oysters at BYB, or if it's just luck of the draw when they can be obtained.

I think they mainly do them around Lent, fish fry season, although Bob and Kathy hang around here from time to time and might pop out of the woodwork to let us know!

Yeah, after I mentioned it on the other forum I got to thinking it might be during Lent. Oh well a lot of folks are hungry for rolled oysters and don't know where to find them.

Hungry Pelican in Fern Creek has them on the menu. For my money, they put out the best fried seafood this side of Clarksville. The homemade desserts they offer are pretty tasty as well!

Krogers carries (frozen) rolled oysters in the frozen food section (next to the shrimp). I've cooked them a couple of times and have actually found them to be as good or better than some I've had in restaurants about town.

Bob Kiper, the straw boss of Home Run Burgers (with his daughter Kathy) was one of the execs of Hungry Pelican back in the day. Bob told me a great story once about having persuaded a cook at Mazzoni's to give him the secret recipe, which purportedly is used at Hungry P and at Home Run.

I can testify that Home Run's model came about as close as any I've tried to the Mazzoni's original.

Speaking of other sources, Flabby's also used to come pretty close. Do they still do the rolled oyster under current management?

It appears Flabby's is closed. Greg Haner sold it quite a while back and the new owners did not use the same recipe. The last we saw of Greg was at Brownie's The Shed on Hurstbourne cooking his rolled oysters, but looking at their current menu, I do not see them on it. :(

Flabby's was mentioned in my other group but thought that was currently a no go. Thanks for all the suggestions.

BTW - Greg Haner has the Mazzoni's recipe, he married into the family and ran Mazzoni's when it was on Taylorsville Rd.

My father saw this discussion and I'm happy to tell you that he decided to offer Rolled Oysters again starting late next week. We will be serving them at only the Hurstbourne, St. Matthews and Middletown locations by Friday, November 1st at the latest. As mentioned, Home Run Burgers always add them to our menu around the Lenten season (a week or so before Fat Tuesday/Ash Wednesday and a couple of weeks after Easter). We would love to serve them year round but for the last five years we have witnessed the demand for Rolled Oysters slow down SO MUCH after Lent that it becomes a challenge to offer a consistently fresh Rolled Oyster. We will have them for a 'limited time' for now and ask for understanding if we happen to run out on occasion. I promise that we will get more fresh oysters ASAP but it's a guessing game! Thanks for the interest and call the stores anytime for more info.

So being a Florida boy, born and raised, and having grown up with oysters raw, steamed, stewed, broiled, fried and cooked into all manner of dishes such as stuffing...is there some specific difference to this local phenomenon called a rolled oyster versus a normal friend oyster?
I eat, therefore I am.
