Lil Cheezer's Out of Business?

by Terri Beam » Fri Oct 11, 2013 9:09 pm

Wave 3 is reporting the Lil Cheezer's store in the Highlands has gone out of business. The trucks will still be out and about, but I'm really disappointed. I don't have the time to go hunting down food trucks unless they're like Las Gorditas (i.e. always in one place).

No explanation was given, although I can only assume it was a matter of profit/loss. Does anyone know anything more specific?

This was written up in today's business 1st and you hit the nail on the head for the reasoning. They said having the store front restaurant was dragging down the food trucks!

I don't know if it's my place to copy and paste a Facebook announcement that Matt Davis made a couple of days ago, but he did tell us that it was with a heavy heart that he had close the brick and mortar Cheezers due to... basically "math" - if the numbers aren't right, then what can you do but focus on the stuff that's selling? He did receive the LEO Reader's Choice award for Best Food Truck, I believe, and he has a super positive attitude about the outcome. Matt was instrumental in getting the city to change it's regulations on food trucks, so I will always give him a huge round of applause for all of his efforts and paving the way for the truck revolution in Louisville. Who friggin' knows how long it would have taken others to get the ridiculousness turned over - he was alarmingly diligent. He went straight to the top, had open discussions on WFPL, and talked to the mayor (and of course Hotbytes) through it all. The man has energy.

I also hope the robbery that they went through a few weeks ago. If revenue was tight to begin with, that's almost impossible to recover from. It takes forever to get your money back via insurance, and depending on the amounts, sometimes its not worth making the claim based on your deductible. Small business is tough enough without scum like that haunting your business.

Best of luck to them, I'll gladly look for them around town in their food truck.

That location is a death trap to restaurants. Which is so odd, given how busy the area is.

Something will succeed there but it will need an approach that is more than a simple meal. That area does have lots of "traffic" but those folks can only each lunch or dinner once per visit.

Having a successful food truck may have been counter productive in this case. If you just enjoyed a meal from Lil Cheezers truck last weekend at XYZ festival, you might hold that against them when you walk by the brick and mortar a few days later. Opting for another of the many dining options in that area.
