New York style Deli in downtown New Albany?

by Todd Antz » Wed Oct 09, 2013 12:15 pm

I've not had a chance to check them out yet, but I just saw this announcement in my email this morning. Based on requests for a New York style deli that I've seen on the forum for the past few years, might this be the one everyone has been looking for?

Primos "New York Style" Deli Now Open in Historic Downtown
Primos Deli is located at 153 E. Main Street and will be opening for business at 6:00am on October 9th. Primos will bring a little "New York Style" to our downtown while offering traditional deli favorites with Dine-In or Carry Out options. Benny Carter, the Owner of Primos is a food industry veteran and is known to many around town for his culinary abilities. Stop by Primos and enjoy breakfast or lunch or grab it to go. Hours Monday - Saturday 6:00am - 4:00pm.

Also in that same email was the following:
Aladdin's Cafe Now Open on Market Street!
Aladdin's Cafe is now open at 111 W Market Street in Downtown New Albany. Aladdin's Cafe adds Middle Eastern Cuisine to the international dining scene in Downtown New Albany. Stop by and try the Best Greek Gyro (beef & Lamb or Chicken), and try the only Middle Eastern Chicken Shawerma in the area (try one and you will fall in love with it).

Try their Famous Tabbouleh, Or Fresh Made Hummus Served With Our House Bread, Or Specialty Foods. Sit back and Relax With An Exceptional Cup Of Hot Coffee, Flavored Tea, Iced Coffee, Turkish Coffee, Or Cappuccino.

New Albany has steadily become the more subtle story of the last 3 years or so with NULU taking marquee billing. It has become a very viable destination choice for us on the KY side of the river. These two new places as described in the posting add even more complexity to the food choices in New Albany. Anyone who hasn't been there in the last few years or so is missing out. It is well worth the drive.

Depends. Are they curing their own meats and krauts in house or order Boars Head products the same as everyone else locally? That will determine my patronage or not.

Well, I suppose it finally had to happen!! I have been lucky in being the only place selling gyros in Southern Indiana since 2004. I dispute the "try the best gyros" claim though, as mine is the best gyros as hundreds of people have told me so!!

We have a gyros merchant on this side of the river who's had at least 10 locations and still purports that theirs is the best gyros in the world.

I like yours though, Alison.

My plans are to wait until after Harvest Homecoming to check both of them out. I would not expect anyone to be on top of their game with an event like this going on. Most restaurants that are in the middle of everything are doing limited menus to help focus things a bit. I'll post back later on what I learn.

I'm not sure if the place opening in NA is going to be the same as this one in Akron, OH?

But if it is, the menu looks *great*!

I've not had a chance to stroll down to Primos to see if they ever got open, but I have had lunch at Aladdin's Cafe. The gyro I had was really good with plenty of meat and toppings. The menu was pretty basic with a choice in a gyro and shawerma with two different side options and baklava for dessert. I didn't venture past the gyro for the first go around due to some time constraints, but as its two blocks from my downtown New Albany store, I'm sure I'll be back. I've not had a chance to get out to A.J.'s to try theirs out, so I won't make a claim on the best gyro until I'm able to make it out there.

I walked by Primo's today and it is definitely not open. It looks like they've done a good job rehabbing the space they are in, but I've had no word on what's going on.... so for now, no New York style Deli in New Albany...

But, another opening is a bakery called Bread and Breakfast. It's located at 157 E. Main St. From their Facebook page: I began business literally as a roadside stand on Hwy 150 selling artisan bread and baked goods and also have sold at the local Farmer's Markets.

For those on Facebook, here is their page: https://www.facebook.com/breadandbreakfast . I've not found a web site for them, but you can also contact them at (812) 725-5983.

Todd, I an closed for the winter so you will have to wait until next March to try our gyros. Please don't get too attached to the Aladdin's Cafe ones in the meantime lol.
