Ron Mikulak retiring from CJ

by Will Crawford » Wed Oct 02, 2013 10:58 am

I wonder what is going to happen to the few pages that the CJ devotes to food.

Ron is a good guy and he will be missed.

Glass raised to Ron. Later tonight I'll put an adult beverage in it.

Editor Veda Morgan is asking readers what they want to see from the food section. Without an in-house writer, its likely they'll default to AP syndicated recipe articles and reprints. The C-J was one of few newspapers with a dedicated test kitchen and that will go away if readers don't speak up.

As someone who works in food PR, I know what a huge benefit it is to our local restaurant scene to have the newspaper share their recipes and stories. You may have noticed in the recent redesign of the Velocity, Dana McMahan's "Dish" column is smaller and the weekly Dining Calendar is gone. Marty Rosen's "In Search Of..." column went away over a year ago.

You can help stop further cuts by emailing Veda at vmorgan@courier-journal.com. Read more: http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20131002/FEATURES02/310020086/1032/FEATURES/Editor-s-Note-Let-s-hear-from-you

With all respect, I'm afraid at this point nothing is going to stop Gannett corporate management from making further cuts.

Have to wonder if he is really retiring or forced to "retire".

Maybe I'm overly optimistic but I refuse to be one of those people who sit and do nothing while talking about the 'once great paper.' The editor specifically asked for suggestions and wants to make the section better. What does it hurt to try?

After scores of non-deliveries over the last couple of years, we finally canceled our subscription last month. The last straw was the decision to collapse the Metro section into the front page, billed as a response to reader demand but really just a way to get away with even less content.

Kind of hard to get excited about sending an email into a black hole asking for them to do anything positive with the CJ. But hope others have at it if they wish.

My best wishes to Mr. Mikulak....a job well done, and a rest well deserved.

Now, who wants to take bets on the further demise of the Curious Jumble?

It is such a shame that what was once a great publication has gone the way the corporate model that has become the norm in the "rag" business....I'm now glad that I didn't pursue my undergrad's degree calling after college.
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!
