Dizzy Whizz

by Marsha L. » Sat Sep 28, 2013 9:20 am

Long time Louisville residents often speak fondly of Dizzy Whizz (downtown near 3rd and St. Catherine), but when was the last time you actually ate there? For me, until yesterday, it's probably been at least 16 or 17 years. I've remembered it fondly, also - but remembered it sort of dirty and funky, too. I remember the burgers tasting great, but also remember being a little wary of the neighborhood and clientele.

Yesterday I had to make my annual pilgrimage downtown to renew our auto registration, and my trek took me past DW, so I decided to stop in and see what was up. I'd originally intended to get something to go, but once I got inside, I changed my mind and decided to eat in the dining room. Why? The place was immaculate. Smelled good, dining room was spotless, counter stool seats were appealing. Service was efficient, snappy and cheerful. My double Whizzburger was as good as ever - the flavors haven't moved an inch in all the time I'd been away. Crinkle-cut fries were hot, perfectly done, the serving size was just right - and the squeeze bottles of ketchup were full and clean. This might sound like a weird compliment, but I find a lot of squeeze bottles of ketchup half-full and sticky at many of the diner-type restaurants in town. I wanted to order a butterscotch shake to go, but I was stuffed. So I will venture back there soon to give it a whirl.

If you find yourself downtown, give Dizzy Whizz a try, or another chance. I was so pleasantly surprised, I just had to share. Dizzy Whizz

I have to admit that I haven't been there for years, Marsha! Maybe since back in the '80s, when I really wanted to include them in a Scene annual dining guide but ultimately had to admit that it wasn't worth putting in the city's top 100 at that point.

Good on you for checking back. Things do change, and if Burger Boy can turn itself around, why not Dizzy Whizz?

Thanks for the report!

I can't say enough good about my experience yesterday. There was a manager in a Dizzy Whizz polo shirt sort of monitoring things in a non-invasive way. Even the parking lot was clean and smelling fine.

I neglected to mention their vast frozen dessert menu. Shakes, cones, banana splits, chocolate covered frozen bananas, sundaes. My goodness.

I work at the church across the street. The people that run it are very good people and do a good job over there! Glad you had a good time.

Kris, I would be as fat as a cow if I worked across the street! How do you resist?

Oh, also - CASH ONLY, so do not forget to bring cash. I wish they took debit cards, but I guess they have weighed processing fees against the number of people who don't carry cash and have decided what's best for them. This is why I carry a twenty everywhere!

Dizzy Whizz is food but its hard for me to go there when Ollie's is so close. Another nice little place near ther is D. Nally's. really clean and they have a bargain breakfast.

Will, I was also considering Ollie's yesterday. Parking was the deal-maker, but I do remember loving the Ollie Burger.

I worked at the old Norton Infirmary at Third and Oak my last two years at U of L - 1968-1970. I frequented Dizzy Whiz then but cannot recall the last time I ate there. I'll be sure to stop by next time I'm downtown. Lots of good memories.

Marsha,
For whatever reason its really not that big of a temptation. That's no comment on the food, but for whatever reason, the Granville is my go to when wanting a burger when I'm at work!

Thanks, Marsha, for the good words about Dizzy Whizz. Hubby and I stop in from time to time when we have the dogs on board. We use the curb service so we can stay in the car with the pups. I'm going to have to try one of those chocolate covered bananas next time we're in there.

Thanks for the awesome review Marsha!
I, as an out of towner, have never eaten there and until now had never heard of them! They are now on this week's list of places to try.

Thanks!

Edited to add:

Someone *cough*ROBIN*cough* should do an article on here or in print on iconic local restaurants of this type (or the Ollie Trolley) and others for out of towners to eat at.

It could be an annually updated article or list.

Its pains me that even as a self proclaimed foodie I hadnt heard of this treasure until now and have missed eating at it over the past 5 years since moving to Louisville!
I eat, therefore I am.

My one and only trip to DW was with Sarah before she moved to London so, maybe, seven years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The hamburgers were like REAL hamburgers and the way I remember them from my childhood. And, as Marsha noted, the place was very clean. I'd go back more often if it was in my trekking area.

[pedantry]3rd & St. Catherine is Old Louisville, not downtown.[/pedantry]
