Mobile Point of Sale Machines

by Ray Griffith » Fri Sep 13, 2013 5:11 pm

It seems that mobile POS machines aren't being used here in the US, at least to any notable level. However, for the past several years, I have seen them all over Europe, Asia and even some places in Africa. They seem very efficient. If for anything, the time savings for the waiter to walk back and forth and in relatively short time, I think that tables would turn over faster. Also, they would give the customer peace of mind that their credit card remains in their sight. I would think that US managers and owners would have been on these long ago.....especially with the turn and burn chains or places like The Bristol or Ramsi's.

Just some curiosity from someone not in the business.

Tumbleweed has them. And other places like Feast use Square with andiPad that's pretty handy. I use Square myself for my persoanl catering gigs and find it to be fairly easy to use and straight forward with user fees that are reasonable as opposed to a merchant based system.

Ive seen a number of places about town using Square at the sales or checkout counter. Please and Thank You comes to mind.

I cant recall any having their servers carrying them. That seems like a cool concept. And does sound like it would increase table turn over, with decreased wait times.

Captain's Quarters is doing some pretty advanced stuff already:

I'm certain that we'll all see a wide spread of mobile technology very soon.

We were just at CQ yesterday. This would have been handy! We had a party of 10 (with 9 bills total) and our server had to make several trips to the bar to run everybody's cards.
