This is especially true when you consider that the original argument was the landscaping was done by Olmsted and that was later proven to be completely false!

I cant speak to the other properties mentioned, but can say your statement isnt accurate at all with regards to Whiskey Row and its last owner Todd Blue. He bought the buildings after they had been abandoned for decades. Decades.
Not one historical preservation person in town gave a whiff of care about them (similar to many of the other empty rotting former commercial locations downtown) until he bought them and proceeded with plans to rehab them saving just the facades.
THEN everyone was up in arms.

Todd bought them in 07 or 08. They werent landmarked till 2010. No one cared until a developer with deep pockets owned them?

I don't think that's true at all, Doug. People did care. And people were fixing up and cleaning up and putting business into the buildings on the west end of the same block!

I won't go pejorative on Mr Blue, but I think your hagiographic treatment is awfully gentle. Parking lots? Really?

I certainly agree, his original announced plans for the site was welcomed with open arms by almost everyone in the community! Only when his plans changed to demolishing all of the buildings did the public uproar began.

They told me that they own the Twig and Leaf. I didn't ask to see the title.

For the record the property is listed with the Sheriff and PVA as owned by:
PNC BANK NA E SLOANE GRAFF TUA FBO E
500 W JEFFERSON ST

I just spent a week researching properties, so it was easy. :)

The buildings on the western end of the same block were in better shape.
And his plans didnt start as parking lots.

Okay. I just happen to think that from those to whom much is given, much should be expected. I guess that's a little Marxist ... or not ... but that's how I gauge it.

Steve,
Never debate quotes with a seminary student:
When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.

MESH IS NOT AT THE BAUER'S LOCATION!

We happen to drive past today, and there are signs out:

(a) At the old Bauer's location is a sign offering the property for lease.
(b) At the next door location where the house used to be (which may have been owned by them, but was not part of the restaurant) is a sign stating Mesh is coming

I think I'm seeing this right (old age - and the fact that I was driving - make me a tad uncertain) but I believe I'm correct.

Andrew, no, you're right, but I think we're dealing with a definitional matter here. I was using "The Old Bauer's Location" in reference to the sterile/modern/plastic redevelopment of the scene where Bauer's/Azalea once stood with its grounds and shady patio, rather than mapping the exact location of the frame building that was allowed to fall into decay before being torn down because, well, it was falling into decay. 8)

Ignoring architectural tragedy for the moment, am I the only one who has spent time doing due diligence on this Cunningham restaurant group ? From all appearances, this is a top notch outfit that puts out some quality food in same pretty darn nice rooms. They have 4 or 5 different concepts going (a couple of them similar in terms of menu and price point) and while I -personally- wish they had elected to exercise their "Moerlin Lager House" concept (awesome beer list) I suppose the geriatric nature of the immediate area  called for something a bit more sedate. Thus Mesh.

Checking Urbanspoon, the Mesh location in Indy has an amazing 90% approval rating among 557 people (which if you follow anything on Urbanspoon are quite amazing numbers) and most of the reviews are highly complimentary. Other social media sites reflect a similar trend. Local ? Noooooo...but we will certainly be giving the place a try.

So will I, of course, but that doesn't stand in the way of a good rant.
