McD's Wings

by Andrew Mellman » Tue Aug 27, 2013 2:44 pm

Evidently all McDonald's nationwide will be introducing chicken wings shortly, to appear at least until early November. It's estimated that this will cause wings nationwide to increase in price to around $2/pound (they are around $1.40/pound now).

Wings will be priced starting at 2.99 for the smallest order (I think four, but not sure), and come with a choice of sauce.

These were in test in Atlanta, and came out a huge seller.

$2.99 for four wings? Isn't that a bit steep???

UPDATE: this article says $2.99 for 3- http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/bus ... s/2700313/

For contrast, Mark's Feed Store's honey wings:

7 Wings - $5.79, 10 Wings - $7.29
Honeywings Dinner- 13 Wings served with Spicy Fries, Cole Slaw & Country Toast - $11.29

Rooties grilled BBQ (the best in the city IMHO) are 10 for $9.69; his standard ones range from $8.99 to 10.49 for 10 (depending on heat level). No way is McD in that category. Rumors (also good) has 10 for $9.99.

In other words, again in my opinion top wings today get approximately $1 per wing, while cheaper places (where I would put Mark's) get less. McD's is charging the higher price point - which it likely doesn't deserve (tho I haven't tried theirs) - but then again their customers are not likely to frequent Rooties or Rumors (or even Mark's)!

I couldn't find what KFC charges, as it seems each location has different pricing, and that's really McD's competition.

I tried the McD's wings today:

On the positive side:
1. They are relatively large
2. They are very lightly breaded; with KFC, I feel like I'm eating chicken-flavored breading, while these were definitely chicken wings
3. The sauces available are the same sauces for chicken McNuggets - most like them, some don't
4. They are flavorful, with a touch of heat

On the negative side
1. My hands were wet after eating them. While a lot of this was grease from frying, some was also water, as they take 6 minutes to fry, and are kept warm (and thus steam escapes)
2. That "touch of heat" is too mild for me, and unsufficiently assertive

In sum, I don't think Rooties et al need stay up worrying. On the other hand, if I were on a road trip looking for a quickie drive-through snack (and had a towel or wet naps handy) I think I'd go here before getting KFC hot wings!

As a -frequent- patron of Rooties (...."Norrrrm") as well as a commonsuer of good wings I must agree, they are indeed the best wings I've had here in Louisville....Alas I -do- wish Marty would get a little more adventurous with his sauces. "Traditional" is nice but I long to see what they could do with some Thai, Cajun or Garlic wings.

...Speaking of the price of Chicken Wings, I am reminded of the days when me 'n the boys used to make our annual (winter) fishing trip up to the Niagara River in Buffalo (circa 1985)...The little joint down the road from the motel we stayed in sold wings for a nickel apiece. You could buy a whole (KFC-sized) "bucket" for around 2 bucks.
