Should Nulu (or a better name) cover all Main and Market?

by Robin Garr » Tue Aug 20, 2013 3:54 pm

RichardM wrote:Not to put a really fine point on that, but Manny & Merle is not close to NuLu... it is a nice NuLu "like" setting, but the 100 block of West Main St is NOT NuLu of East Market.

You know, this is going to be a rant, but not at you, Richard.

I don't think the commercial entities that chose to make up a goofy New York-like name for an emerging hot strip have any particular right to name its boundaries. 8) I think the renaissance of the north side of downtown from I-65 east to the old Stockyards along Market and Main and environs is remarkable, and since "NuLu" seems to be taking hold whether I like it or not, I'm claiming "NuLu" to refer to the whole stretch. It's all connected and generally similar and deserves a unifying moniker, so let it be NuLu from Proof to Blind Pig. Harrumph!

Robin, I couldn't agree more! I don't like the name NuLu mainly because it really doesn't give any definition to the area. Any place in Louisville could be considered NuLu at a given time. In reality, even new restaurants opening in Fern Creek Could say that they are part of the NuLu group.

This was always the area I considered NuLu.

Justin, yes, that's Gill Holland's definition. I thought I made clear that I understand there's an existing use.

I'm just thinking that we really need a unified designation for Main, Market and environs, and there's no reason not to expand the idea of NuLu since it's clearly taking hold, whether it sounds stupid or not.

Based and that definition Blind Pig wouldn't be part of NuLu and just about everybody I know thinks it is! As I've stated before and many others have stated the entire term needs to go away and just call the area East Market.

I would never think of Blind Pig as NuLu. I would say Butchertown.

Not to quibble, Robin, but Proof is not part of NuLu- that's too far . They are part of Museum Row on Main- which starts at KCA and ends at at Slugger/Frazier Museums.

I don't know why I don't seem to be able to express myself clearly tonight.

One more time: I'm proposing redefining NuLu - or coming up with a new, better, moniker - to recognize the reality that Main and Market (and Butchertown environs) really comprise a single, magnificent Restaurant Row, and deserve a common identifier.

Since NuLu is a highly artificial construction, it seems like a reasonable target for appropriation.

Yes, I hesitated and sucked it up to type those four letters in a recent post as it seems everyone has gone to that sad name. To me there's East Downtown (2nd to Baxter) & West Downtown (2nd to Ninth & will hopefully grow farther west in my lifetime). Both go from the river to Broadway. Butchertown has enough to make it unique and distinct from the downtown areas. It may not be a pretty name but at least it wasn't made up by some kid, who looks like the Illustrated Man got hit by shrapnel, after burping "NOOLOO" on the ninth PBR. Just saying.

Last several posts looks like the digression is taking over from the subject of new places. Maybe good to split this one off? I bet a lot of people think 'the four letter word' should be replaced.

Good idea, Lonnie. I know the forum software supports splitting a thread, but "it's complicated." I'll work on it after breakfast and coffee. Both topics would really probably thrive in separate lives. :)

PS: Done!

I like the fact that downtown Louisville is/has been broken down into different areas. I think the areas are divided nicely into easily walkable areas. I choose the area to town I want to enjoy and can easily walk to 5-6 places in each area. Museum Row and Whiskey Row blend/transition nicely, but there is a dead zone between Whiskey Row and NuLu.

Museum Row
Whiskey Row - Arena
NuLu
Butchertown

Okay, I'm on board, and this might be a little like Clifton and Crescent Hill, or Baxter and Bardstown. Or something.

But I still like the idea of an over-arching term to cover the four "downtown" districts that you've so well enumerated. And since NuLu seems to have gained traction, despite its goofiness, I'm inclined to claim it both for the original neighborhood and for the larger strip.

Sort of kidding around here, but not entirely ...

You also have the area around Marketplace and BBC on 4th that really don't fit neatly into any of those areas.

Zagat came out with the 20 hottest neighborhoods for food; we're #19:

"Louisville: NuLu
NuLu, or the East Market District, is undoubtedly Louisville's hottest neighborhood for restaurants right now, particularly East Market Street, which is stacked with eateries and cafes like Rye on Market, Harvest, La Coop Bistro à Vins, Taco Punk, Garage Bar, Please and Thank You, Decca and Wiltshire on Market. Whatever you guys decide to name it please include Blind Pig because that would put my business in that district too! :D
