Top 10 restaurants, diners and coffee shops in Louisville?

by Mark R. » Sun Aug 18, 2013 6:02 pm

I ran across this article by Michelle Jones of Consuming Louisville in the US edition of the Guardian Newspaper. There are certainly some on the list I wouldn't include and some notable restaurants missing. What's everybody else's opinion?

Here's the article: http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2013/aug/17/top-10-louisville-restaurants-diners-coffee-shops

Any such top 10 list is extremely subjective, especially in light of such a wide ranging choice of dining options. What's important, in my view, is the exposure. Each article and TV show highlighting the culinary scene here raises the city's profile as a serious player in this sense.

It's hard to argue with anything on that list, but any list like this that doesn't mention Seviche is suspect. Seviche and Anthony Lamas are nationally-known entities, and deserve special respect. The writer is either ignorant or biased. We were just at Seviche tonight: lamb heart skewers, lamb fries, ribeye tostado, grouper seviche, hand-made guacamole... you can't get anything else like that (not all at one sitting, anyway, and all perfectly prepared) anyplace within 100 miles (or more?) of Louisville.

Blake, he certainly mentioned one of the restaurants I felt should have been on the list and we have several others who chefs have been nationally recognized extensively such as Corbitt's, 610 Magnolia, Lily's just to name a few and we certainly have several others that have James Beard recognized chefs! I certainly don't believe that Please and Thank You should have been on the list, it really doesn't even classify as a good coffee shop in my opinion and to say that its menu was limited would probably be giving it too much credit.

I'm not saying this judgmentally in any way, just analyzing this as a writer: What we have here is a free-lance writer who pitched an article to The Guardian, got the assignment, and wrote about some of her favorites. That's personally legit - one person's opinion - and hey, it's great publicity for Louisville!

The Guardian is doing a Louisville day on their travel series. Michelle did one, Erin Keane did one, and Will Russell did one.

by Mark R. » Mon Aug 19, 2013 1:34 pm

Southern living just published a list of 100 places to eat now and again Louisville as well as Kentucky did quite well. There are 6 Kentucky restaurants on the list,
610 Magnolia, Louisville
Seviche,
MilkWood
Proof on Main
Wallace Station, Versailles
Jonathan at Gratz Park, Lexington
