Main Street Cafe

by Steve A » Sat Aug 17, 2013 3:06 pm

After passing the Main Street Breakfast Lunch Cafe (217 E. Main St, in the Ice House) numerous times on my downtown lunchtime walks, I decided to look them up online. What I found was... yes indeed, breakfast! And as a bonus they open at 7:30 am, and serve both breakfast and lunch all day on the weekends.

There are no major negatives on the usual online review sites, and they have an interesting menu, so I thought we'd give them a try.We rolled up this morning around 8. You can eat outside or in. We opted for inside, which we found pleasantly decorated in earth tones with a modern decor (those words that I learned watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, no doubt).

Once seated, we ordered coffees, then our meal. Barbara opted for something named "The Smoke" ($9.75) - which is listed on their menu as a Tri-Fold Omelet of MSC Sorghum Bacon, Smoked Gouda & Smoked Mushrooms, topped with our Smoked Onion Marmalade served with your choice of Hash Browns or Grits, Toast or a Biscuit. She opted in for the hash browns, and opted out of the gluten products. Her verdict: Very tasty, and though smoky as advertised, not overly so.

I went for a lunch item. The Housemade Smoked Corned Beef ($10) , described as with or without Braunschweiger (without for me, thanks), Swiss, Russian Dressing & Slaw on Rye, It just sounded so good I couldn't pass it up. This came to our table with a kosher dill spear and chips on the plate. The corned beef is brined in-house, and it’s served on a grilled soft, dark rye. I have to tell you, the meat was moist and tender, and the sandwich tasted great.

As a bonus, they sell meat to go, including their sorghum and savory bacons, andouille sausage, chorizo, corned beef and pastrami, and offer prepared salads as well.

Located a couple of blocks west of Slugger Field, this is Yet Another Place to add to our growing list of breakfast favorites.

Nice review!

That sounds delicious.

House corned beef? Yes and thank you. I really like that they put Braunschweiger on their menu as well.

From a German boy who keeps it in the fridge, Braunschweiger is a huge plus.....

The whole things sounds incredible!

Cheers!
