Gavi's is NOT closed!

by Lois Mauk » Thu Aug 08, 2013 6:47 pm

I picked up a copy of Food & Dining magazine at lunch today. Fall 2013 edition. Was stunned to see on page 7 a report that "Gavi's, a long-time player in the downtown lunch business mix, at 222 S. Seventh St., has closed."

I grabbed the phone and called one of the owners. David Gavi assured me on Thursday night, August 8, 2013 that Gavi's restaurant is alive and well and open for business.

Food & Dining is a quarterly publication. It will be months before any retraction they might publish will appear. As we know, word of mouth can be very damaging so please spread the word that the rumors of Gavi's demise are greatly exaggerated, to borrow a phrase from M. Twain.

I wonder if they will have any recourse if their business declines? It would be interested to see where the magazine got the information.

That's what I was wondering. Seems to me F&D ought to be coming up with some free advertising for Gavi's as well as a retraction.

I've always been intrigued by that place, set down in the underbelly of a parking garage. I work a 3rd shift downtown, and that might be a nice place to grab breakfast and a beer.

Wasn't it a Mazzoni's many moons ago?

It was! I believe that was Mazzoni's last incarnation downtown before it moved out to Taylorsville Road.

I think they were temporarily closed after the manhole explosion downtown because it was right in front of them and the resulting power surge killed some of their equipment, I remember reading...but I believe it was very short.

If I am remembering correctly, anyway.

We've been there and it was tasty.

It took them a while, but Food & Dining finally has a correction/apology on their website:

I've never been on their website, but still have the paper copy with the error. I'm with Carla- they should get some free print advertising out of this.

I posted that suggestion on FB this morning and they deleted it. Now I am wondering about the sincerity of their apology.

They deleted it?!? Wow, that was a dumb response. Not like you were going off on some rant.
