Any Frankfort connections?

by Doug Davis » Thu Aug 08, 2013 3:35 pm

I need some help.

Every Monday I drive down to Fort Knox to work with wounded vets in the Warriors Transition Battalion. I volunteer my time teaching them kayaking skills as a low impact means of exercise and way to rebuild confidence.

Well the one thing they wanted more than anything was to get out of the pool and put their skills to use on a real river. But due to sequestration and budget cuts it didnt look like that was going to happen. Luckily my friend and fellow paddle sports industry guy, Nathan Depenbrock, the owner of Canoe Kentucky stepped up and will provide them all with a free trip down the Elkhorn in Frankfort. Nathan deserves a lot of thanks for this!

But the next obstacle we need to overcome is feeding about 20 or so hungry troops. I would prefer to do something other than having them eating MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat the army's combat rations) after their river trip.

Does anyone on here know any local restaurant owners in Frankfort who might donate a lunch for these service men and women, after they get off the river?
I eat, therefore I am.

I would definitely check with Rick at the White Light. He is a veteran. I wouldn't be surprised if your Canoe Kentucky contact weren't acquainted with Rick. In any event, just stopping by there for breakfast or lunch one day and talking to him may interest him in the project.

+1

Rick is a real character, in a good way, but this sounds like the kind of thing that might catch his fancy.

Doug-
Do you have a PayPal account you'd feel comfortable posting or PMing to me? I bet this group could easily come up with up enough $$$ to buy 20 lunches and a few beers.
I'm in.

I'll throw in a few farthings if it comes to that, but I'd also consider giving Rick a call ... if he buys in, he'd do a spectacular job.

I called Joy at the city/county tourism board, whom I have dealt with a few times in state meetings on tourism and economic development. Waiting to hear back from her.

I had heard of Rick's due to it being on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives but based on pictures I saw on Yelp it didnt look like it could seat or handle 20 people at once. Was I wrong?

Any other place or owner you might also suggest?

And while I appreciate the offers to donate, Im not sure if I (or the vets) would feel comfortable taking donations, as I dont know many of you in real life and you yourself might be in a tough situation. If it comes to that I would just cover it myself for the guys and gals.

We went on one canoe KY trip that had a contingent of vets too - a good time was had by all.

In addition to hearing back from Joy, you should check with Nathan to see when & where you are going to come out of the water.

If you are going to need sack lunches then you might want to contact Danny Bryant at the PicPac supermarket on W 2nd Street. They have a food counter during the week which serves excellent fried chicken. Even if you aren't going to need sack lunches but will be coming out to eat after the trip then he could probably put together a catering package which you could take down to Dolly Graham Park (not too far from where picpac is).

Nathan might also have suggestions for where to eat near the end point of the trip.

There's one eatery down by the creek, I think it's run by Stinks (no I'm not kidding), but I've not eaten there so I can't say whether it would be appropriate or approachable.

Another option would be to see if the folks at Wallace Station (Midway-ish) would put together sack lunches for your group.

While 20 would pretty much fill Rick's, I think they would fit; give him a call - worst thing he could say is "no"

I'm in for a couple $ and think I know where to find a beer or two.
