iPhone app to track food trucks

by Scott Hack » Fri Jul 12, 2013 4:36 pm

This was passed along to me today.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wherethetrucks.at/id665684312?mt=8

I'm team Android, so I couldn't play with it, but the I know this was born from one of the StartUp Weekends that was held in Louisville. Glad to see some people continuing on with their projects. What does everyone think?

So far I haven't seen a single "hit" on this app. I guess no local trucks are participating.

Right now it IS a local app, and yes, trucks are participating.

I couldn't find any local trucks. Maybe too soon?

It is my understanding that the data is live. So if you check at night, or a day when it is raining, etc You might not see anyone. The trucks update their location each morning so you can find them.

Yes - it does work, but it only shows trucks when they are operating - which makes sense.

I just downloaded it. At 11:24AM it lists 15 trucks, only one of which is listed as open with all others listed as closed. Does that sound right? Do the trucks usually start later than other lunch places? Are there way more than 15 food trucks in the area? And if anyone who is developing this app is reading this, have a map button on the trucks page with the "call" "send email" and "website" buttons. I don't want to have to go back to the list to find the location when I'm on the truck's listing.

Its new. We have to remember to use it. We have to Open our location in the app when we open the truck for business. And close our location in the app when we close for the day. Its one more thing to remember as we're doing all our physical set up and close down procedures.

Making a few assumptions since I don't have an iphone: The app might be more useful for the food truck owners if it allowed a configurable alarm to remind them to change their status to "active", then have a one-button push to set it for their shift. The app could go as far to allow the vendor to set it to remain active for a number of hours and automatically reset to inactive status.

Here, gimme the keyboard, I'll fix it. :P

It would also be nice to get an Android version, since they currently have 52% of the smartphone market, versus 39% for the iphone.

Yeah, I'm Android and PC totally. We refer to our house as a "mixed marriage." Hubby is iPhone and Mac.

Hey everybody-

I'm part of the team that put this app together. I haven't ever posted here before so thank you to Leah for responding thus far.

@Mike There are more than 15 in Louisville, close to double that. We're working to add the others, but only if they actually intend to use it.

@Steve Android is in our future. As an Android guy I would've liked to have started there, but we began at Startup Weekend which is pretty ad hoc and the talent we had join the team dictated which platform.

Glad to see you guys checking it out. We'd love to hear any other feedback. I'll keep a better eye on this thread.

Will

If you don't have it yet you can get it here.

Looks like they've added some trucks to the app, including my fave, Boss Hog BBQ. I hadn't noticed Jam Pan before either. This is great.
