Sign up here for Sunday Forum Iron Chef Offline!

by Robin Garr » Tue Nov 27, 2007 5:55 pm

Okay, with many thanks to Dave Pierce, forumites will gather for a festive "offline" get-together to share good food, good drink and good fellowship as we watch Chefs Todd and Duane and Mixologist Jerry take on Cat Cora on Iron Chef America!

Show time is 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, and I suggest (if it's okay with Dave) that we set the start time for 7 p.m. so we can eat and start drinking before the show comes on.

I've been encouraged to come up with secret ingredients so anyone who cares to do so can fashion an appetizer or hot dish for the group using one or both. I think I'll go with one protein source (may be meat) and one sweet treat (won't be meatful). Watch this space ... I'll post the secret ingredients soon.

Meanwhile, to help Dave get a head count, please post a reply to this thread if you and, if you wish, spouse/life partner/significant other/friend, will be joining in the fun.

Sorry, Robin, but I'm not a professional chef; therefore, I need to know the "secret" ingredient(s) before I commit.

I'll post shortly, as soon as I think about it. :)

This is IMPORTANT, though! I really hope that no one will be intimidated by this "iron chef" potluck idea. It's just optional, and we don't even have to have it in the form of a contest. It's just for fun, and if someone doesn't want to use the ingredients, or doesn't want to compete, I want them to feel totally, 100 percent NOT pressured.

I hope this is really clear. I'd be very sad indeed if I found out people decided to skip this event because they were skittish about taking part in a cooking contest.

I'm in.... Although I dunno about bringing anything, unless it's a thing already made (I'm kinda swamped right now, among other things).... But I'd love to join in the festivities.... Me and my spouse/life partner/significant other/sometimes friend. :D

In other words, two.... I only have so much energy.

Robin,

Count me in! I'm checking with Brian to see if it's one or two (we'd have to get a sitter).

Richard and I will be there. Besides a dish or two, do we need to bring non-alcoholic drinks? :D

And the secret ingredients are ...

by Robin Garr » Wed Nov 28, 2007 12:30 am

Okay, I want to make this really easy for everyone, and again, I can't emphasize too strongly that offline participants are not required to use any of the secret ingredients, or to submit to judging. :)

That said, I've selected several ingredients, trying to accommodate carnivores, vegetarians and dessert lovers all three. Extra applause for anyone who can bring together intriguing combinations of two or more in a single dish!

MEAT: Ham! (Or bacon or other similar cured pork products)

SEAFOOD: Shrimp!

CHEESE: Sharp cheddar!

VEGETABLE: Eggplant!

DESSERT INGREDIENT: Dark, dark chocolate, of course!

I'm bummed that we can't make the festivities, but we'll be watching at home! I can't wait to hear a play-by-play of the Louisville Iron Chef battle.
