Where can I find these beers?

by Lonnie Turner » Thu Jun 27, 2013 12:41 am

Sorry, it's not a restaurant post, but since it's liquid bread I figure it's food.
I was waxing sentimental about some old faves I haven't seen around in recent decades in either bars / restaurants or adult beverage shops. All are imports. At the time I could find them here American craft brewing was in it's infancy.
I really, totally, seriously have trouble expressing just how much I miss the following beers I used to be able to get recently (you know, early '80s & into the '90s) around Louisville. Recently enough I remember the taste, anyway:
Mackeson Stout
McEwan Scotch Ale
Fraoch Heather Ale
Whitbread
EKU Dark
There was a time in the early '80s when the first two pretty much was all that occupied my fridge apart from carry out pizza leftovers.
I've adapted to the hops fetish (equivalent in beer to the Scoville tolerance among hot sauces) to a point, kicking & screaming, (and praise all that's holy the fruity beer perversion inflicted on us around the turn of the century has all but died out) but, as you can see from some of the above, beers that you could pour on pancakes in the morning are OK by me as well.
Where can they be obtained?

Mackeson Stout - No longer imported to the US. It was being brewed in Cincy by at the Sam Adams Brewery, but they ceased brewing that version around 2 years ago

McEwan Scotch Ale - No longer imported to the US. Newcastle bought them out several years ago and stopped importing them. Used to be one of my go-to beers.

Fraoch Heather Ale - Should be readily available in most good beer stores, but I can tell you for certain that there are 3 Four packs of it available at the Clarksville location of Keg Liquors.

Whitbread - Same story as Mackeson Stout. I recently found a 3 year old bottle while cleaning out a section of our store room. 3 years did not do anything good to that beer.

EKU Dark - I'm going to take a flyer and say you are looking for EKU 28. Imported by Shelton Brothers now, it should be available at better beer stores, but I can tell you for certain that there are 2 cases of it available at the Clarksville location of Keg Liquors.

I just bought a six pack (used to come in 4 pack) of my favorite beer, Mackeson Stout, at Liquor Barn - Springhurst two weeks ago.

I stand corrected on Mackeson, unless you got a really old 6 pack. I know when it was coming out of Cincinnati, they were in six packs. I'd love to see it back though. Would you mind looking to see if there was a date on the bottle?

We went out to the LAC out in J-town today so I stopped at the Hurstbourne Liquor Barn. They did have six packs of Mackeson XXX Milk Stout 11.16 oz (330ML) bottles. Inspection of the label shows at least some of their production comes from Trinidad! Carib Brewing. This six had a date of Dec. 2012. Wouldn't expect it to be off yet by any means, doubt there was much sun exposure though hard to know about temperature fluctuations. I'm working on my second and last one for today. Never did like to drink more than a couple of these, or the McKewan's, at a time before switching to less overpowering (in terms of flavor) beverages. The appearance and blessed lack of all that damned foam afflicting so many beers is preserved. It's sweet, smoky and very creamy. And it's as close to hops-free as I'm likely to find this side of Heaven's gates. It tastes much like it did 20 or more years ago though not exactly. I know companies want to guard their flavor profiles aggressively, even the megaswilleries do that. So I don't know if maybe it is the same and I just don't taste it the same way as years ago. That does seem to be the case with a few things over the decades. It's quite enjoyable, though, that's not changed.

I expect we'll be at the LAC in Clarksville one day next week so I'll stop in for some Fraosch, if it's still there!

Where can I find these beers: Part 2 - Domestic

by Lonnie Turner » Sat Jul 06, 2013 7:04 pm

Thanks for the tips on Mackeson & Fraoch. Picked up two 4-packs of the latter at The Keg (thanks to Todd) Friday and have rationed myself two so far. Now THAT one is just like I remember. Nectar of the gods unspoiled by those damned hops, or relatively little if anyway.

I used to keep our neighborhood liquor store pretty sold out on Gerst & John Gilbert's Riverboat Blend and I know those are gone, though I was able to get Gerst on draft on a visit to Evansville in 2009. But here are some I used to buy all the time, some domestic staples in the '80s into the '90s I haven't seen in years. Any chance they are out there somewhere? It'd be worth a vacation to someplace just to once again have:
Huber Bock
Rhinelander Bock
Lowenbrau Dark
Augsburger Bock & Dark (esp. the bock as the dark had a bit too much bite for me)

Thanks for stopping in for the Fraoch. Huber Bock is available to us in 12 packs. I'd have to check on the Rhinelander Bock, as we can get some of their beers, but I'm not sure about that particular one. The original Lowenbrau Dark is no longer imported to the US. I believe it was swooped up by InBev, and they discontinued bringing it to us after that.
