Four Sisters in Clifton

by Steve A » Sun Jun 16, 2013 2:37 pm

As part of our everlasting hunt for different breakfast places, my Angel and I came across a new restaurant in Clifton on Saturday. It's a French Vietnamese blend, and they serve savory and sweet crepes, zippy banh mi sandwiches and an assortment of hot coffees and teas.

Playing it kind of safe the first time in, we both ordered breakfast crepes. I had an egg, ham and cheese crepe. The egg was served sunny side up smack in the middle, on top of ham, cheese and crepe, in that order. Barbara ordered sun dried tomatoes and sauteed onions with goat cheese on a crepe, with balsamic vinegar drizzled on top. Both were exceptionally well cooked and presented. For beverages we had an americano and a hot chai.

What a delight! While admittedly we like to try a variety of things for breakfast, this was spot on. The really nice thing about having these light and slightly crepes is that you're full, yet don't feel like you need a nap because they're not heavy like traditional pancakes.

Service was fast and friendly, and BONUS - you can get anything on the menu for breakfast, which means next time I'll be trying out the banh mi.

Five Sisters is located at 2246 Frankfort, just this side of Basa and across the street from Lee tires. They don't have a website up yet, but I think you can find them on The FaceSpace.

For the record, it was spotted on the forum a while back, but the topic never caught fire. ;)

Just a quick follow up: We went back a few weeks ago to test the "whole menu all day" thing. We both had banh mi, with Barbara ordering the mushroom and tofu, and the marinated grilled pork for me.

We opted for whole wheat buns for our sandwiches. They came to the table crispy and warm, while the fillings were crunchy and fresh. I've only had banh mi at one other place (Nam Nam), but a nice touch was that Four Sisters put the peppers (jalepenos) in a bowl on the side so you could adjust the heat as you wish.

Once again, the food was great, as was the service.

The next time we find our way there it'll be a difficult choice between the savory crepes, banh mi or the sweet crepes, which we haven't tried yet.

I took my Mom there a couple of weeks ago and it was delicious. On the sever's recommendation I had the goat cheese crepe. Super yummy. Mom had the basil/ mozzarella/tomato. It was good, but for me I can get that flavor combo anywhere. We split the white chocolate/almond/strawberry crepe for dessert (it was her birthday), addictively delicious!

We've been there twice so far for lunch. I've had the feta, onion, chives, egg & sundried tomato crepe & the tomato, basil & mozz crepe. The former is my current pick for what I'd want as my last meal. The latter, BTW, is nothing like a pizza or a flatbread so given the ingredients I was surprised. My wife had the feta and avocado crepe both times because it was so good. I want to get to banh mi eventually but those savory crepes are so compelling it may be a while. My wife enjoyed the smoothies but I am a big fan of their iced coffee. I asked a sister about it who said the sister who makes it lets the grounds sit in a vat of cold water for a day if I understood her right. That is supposed to account for the mind-bogglingly rich flavor and intense caffeine rush. If you try it, don't ruin it with sweetener or milk - at least try it straight before modifying to your preference.

Been there twice in the past couple weeks for lunch. Yesterday I got the avocado/mushroom/spinach/something else I can't remember crepe and it was damn good. The first time I went there I got the sun dried tomato/goat cheese/caramelized onion crepe and it was also quite good. Both times I think my bill ran me eleven or twelve bucks for the food and a latte.

Yumm. Sounds delicious. A vermicelli bowl would be a nice summertime option.

We went today before a movie and loooooooooooved it! We shared a pork banh mi and a goat cheese crepe. John had a Vietnamese tableside drip ice coffee and I had a mocha blender drink. The sisters were so warm and welcoming, and the decor/atmosphere was, too. We can't wait to go back, it was dreamy. Try it!
