Derby-Pie: Meh?

by Robin Garr » Sun Jun 09, 2013 9:11 pm

I hate to pick on a local tradition, but I had my first slice of Derby-Pie® in many years today, and found it less than satisfying. It was like eating a spoonful of sugar, just as sweet and not all that much more flavor interest.

What's your opinion? Meh also, or am I being too tough on it?

I'm not a "pie" guy but I enjoy a wee sliver of Derby Pie once or twice a year...but that's about it. Much prefer the Bourbon Barrel pie...when I find myself in a pie kinda mood.

I really dislike it warm- but I will munch on a small ice cold piece now and again- every five years or so.

I prefer just plain pecan pie over Derby pie. The chocolate bits just push it over the diabetic coma edge for me.

Robin,

I'm with Carla. I never really cared for the chocolate chip addition as much as really good pecan pie- with bourbon in it, of course.

but Derby Pie (R) is made with walnuts . . . and no bourbon.

And mine's better too.

Well there you go! (I still like pecan pie better.)

I only go for the "derby pie" influenced ice cream at Comfy Cow. Give that one a whirl.. oh yes.

In general I've found fake derby pie to be better than real derby pie.

You won't go for it any more. Tim tells me that Kern's Kitchen threatened to sue their waffle cone off if they didn't stop it. :?

I thought they still are selling it yet under a different name... damn. If not, that's disappointing. That was the best ice cream I have ever had.
