Suggestions for Downtown/ easy highway access eating?

by Deb Hall » Thu Jun 06, 2013 2:54 pm

Okay, I need help folks. I've just returned from Italy and my brain is still seriously in vacation mode. :D I need to select a place to meet a girlfriend from Floyds Knobs for drinks and a light dinner next week- and I'm drawing a blank. We need some place easy (er) for both of us to get to ( me, East End/ her, Knobs) , quiet enough for great conversation, good food and moderately priced. The only thing I've come up with so far is Bistro 1860, thinking the small plates option could be good- I haven't been yet.

Any suggestions from this august group?

Another place in the same vicinity would be the original North End Café. It's less than a quarter-mile off the Mellwood exit of I 64. They also have a small plate menu.

If you are already off the freeway on Frankfort avenue, then there's no reason not to go just a little farther to Varanese.

Everyone should checkout Hillbilly Tea. Two floors of dining plus the roof top-which we haven't been to yet. They're on my list to visit again soon.

In downtown I'd recommend Down One Bourbon Bar and Sidebar (especially if you're looking for burgers), I've eaten at both recently and have had very good experiences. In fact the food I've had at Down One so far has been really really good. I've definitely made a meal of the small plates at Rye and La Coop as well. Also Wiltshire on Market.
Over here in the big SINdiana I'd recommend our neighbors at The Exchange and Bank Street, as we (Feast) might be a bit too noisy and hectic for legitimate dinner conversation.

Also Mark Ford just accepted the position as exec. chef at St. Charles Exchange so that will definitely be a spot to hit soon, but I would give him a month or two to get his menu out and staff in place.

Thanks, Ryan! Actually I have plans to come with a different group of girlfriends on the 19th- I look forward to seeing you ( and eating your fantastic food!)

My vote is for Hillbilly Tea. I have a very short list of restaurants that I get updates from on Facebook, and they are one of them. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants of all time. Have you been? I've also been to Bistro 1860, and since you haven't been there, that might be a good way to go.

Or River City Winery in NA? They have the best crab cakes I've ever had, and a very focused chef. More than just pizza, but the pizza is truly remarkable. Wine only.

Deb - Bistro 1860 is really good. If you haven't been, definitely give it a shot.
