Biz First: New Molly Malone's replaces BW-3 in St. Matt

by Robin Garr » Mon Nov 26, 2007 12:34 pm

Close, but not too close
Area's second Molly Malone's location headed for nearby St. Matthews
Business First of Louisville
by Terry Boyd Business First Staff Writer

In the future, diners looking at a long wait at Molly Malone's Irish Pub Restaurant's Highlands location might be able to save themselves some time by driving 10 minutes to a new location in St. Matthews.

Attracted by established neighborhoods in the St. Matthews area, Molly Malone's partners plan a second local location of their Irish restaurant.

They expect to open one in the St. Matthews Station development at 3900 Shelbyville Road next year.

[ ... ]

"We feel like some of those people who came to Baxter when they were young have moved from the Highlands and have bought homes in the St. Matthews area," [partner Donal] Ryan said. "We've always thought the St. Matthews area is a good area" for a second location.

He and his partners have signed a lease with Breeland Development Corp., which owns St. Matthews Station, to replace Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar restaurant.

Molly Malones

Hmmmm, let's see. Keeping the traditional Molly Malones in the highlands and adding a second one . . . . replacing a Buffalo Wings . . . . sounds like a winner to me!

I'm down with that idea! Just halfway between the two ... which way to go?

It's going to be tough to bypass BBC to go to the St. Matthews Molly's, though.

I thought I saw a Molly Malone's in Newport (or Covington?) a couple weeks back. Is that an extension of the Louisville one?

I haven't heard of that, but would guess that it's just a coincidence of names. "Molly Malone," the title of a popular, old Irish folk song, is not likely trademarkable.

Nope, the NKY location is indeed owned by the Louisville people...

The NKY Molly Malone's is in Covington. It is the in the former Jack Quinn's Pub, which is a beautifully renovated old building in downtown Covington.

The biggie:
Napa River Grill, moving to Westport Village after the first of the year.

Also:
Lemongrass
El Tarasco
Pit Stop

I agree with you, and I'm not sure whether to find it exciting or worrisome. If it represents the East End maturing into more-than-chain country, it's a good thing. If it's a serious sign of the city "shelling out" and social change that makes it less desirable or necessary for suburbanites to come into the city at all, ever, I'm not so sure.

Indeed it did, and the band was Frank Zappa's. Here is the lyrical aside you're thinking about, Robert:

(Is that a real poncho . . . I mean
Is that a Mexican poncho or is that a Sears poncho?
Hmmm . . . no foolin' . . . )

Merely substitute "Taco Hell" for Sears, and you get my drift, eh?

It's funny that Molly's is replacing B-dubs, because I've always thought Molly's has really good wings! Anybody else ever tried them? I didn't really have high expectations (I don't think of Irish pubs as a destination for hot wings), but I have really enjoyed them every time I've had them.

That little area in St. Matthews has turned into a nice restaurant destination...BBC, Brendan's, Carolina Shrimp, Rick's Ferrari Grill, 211 Clover Lane, and now Molly's all within walking distance of each other.

Thanks for the nod Miss Leah!

I am really happy that Molly's will be within walking distance of Meridian.

It is not often that I get to Molly's in the 'lands but, I will make it a point to share equally between Irish Rover and Molly's!

This is my favorite time of the year for an Irish atmosphere..... you throw on that Donegal sweater, and have a couple of beers, and the stew, and fireplace umm umm.
