Best meat around...

by Steve P » Sun Jun 02, 2013 11:44 am

Everyone has their favorite location to buy meat...and after trying out many of the places we've heard people talk about, we've settled in on Crestwood Market (NOT Crestwood Meats on 146...but rather the little grocery store behind the Walgreens) as having the best meat around. The Butcher/Meat-cutter (who has been there through a couple of different owners) is a great guy and if you don't see exactly what you want then just ask...9 times out of ten he'll pull something out of the cooler and cut it just the way you want it. Special occasion ? Big BBQ coming up ? Give them a call a few days in advance and they'll order in exactly what you need. Yesterday for example we took a pass on getting steaks at Costco (nice looking beef - but we didn't need the "family pack") and a quick trip through Kroger left us underwhelmed (I swear they cut their steaks so thin you can see through them)...Stopping at Crestwood Market on the way home we picked up a couple of inch and a half thick NY Strips that were dah bomb.

Maybe a little out of the way for the inside the Watterson crowd but for those of you on the east side it is well worth the 10 minute (or so) drive to Crestwood to check this place out...You won't be disappointed.

Note....This place just went through a change in ownership a year or so ago. It -used- to be an IGA but they've changed the name to something else and exactly what that name is evades me at the moment...Everyone around here (still) just calls it "Crestwood Market"

Our go to place for meets has been Butchers Best in Prospect for the last couple of years. This sounds interesting however and is about the same distance from our home. Have you tried Butchers Best? How would you compare the 2? They sound quite similar in that they will cut to order whatever you are looking for.

Yes, yes I have tried Butcher's Best...Jimmy and the gang out there are awesome and I can see why they have such a loyal following...The fact that he's a Browns fan further endears him to me. Truthfully though, I like Crestwood Markets meats better. For example they carry a (small name) brand of country style bacon that is just dah bomb...Never seen it anywhere else. I'm also pretty impressed with the prices...Yesterday Whole Beef Tenderloin was going for 6.89 a pound.

I limit myself to beef once a month. On one of my beef days I bought a TBone from Crestwood Market. I wasn't expecting much because I had been burned badly there when it was the I G A but that TBone was the bomb! I didn't post about it because frankly I thought maybe I was just "steak starved" and anything would've tasted good. Maybe I should have given them more credit. It was a very good tasting steak eaten with no steak sauce just a bit of salt and pepper.

$6.89?? Is that a typo, Steve? That's a great price for tenderloin.

Nope...no typo. BUT (and I always forget about this until check-out and thus should have mentioned this up front)...the way this store does business is that they price everything in the store at "cost" then when you get to the check out they -add- 10% to your total. Kinda of an unusual way of doing business but hey it seems to be working for them so far. Soooo, bottom line you can add .68 cents to the $6.89. Still not a bad price.

BTW...the meat prices aside, this really is a neat little store. It's one of those old fashioned little "local" grocery stores...the kind you used to see in every small town. Not sure of the square footage but they've got (I think) three check out lanes if that gives you any idea...They stock the place with a combination of national brands and quite a few "independent label" and/or regional brands. In terms of national brands their prices are pretty much in line with Kroger but many of the "Independent Label" products are priced quite low by comparison. The only complaint I have is that their fresh produce can be a little -iffy- at times...as in a day or two past it's prime.

We don't do all of our shopping here but if I were to go through the checkbook I'd probably discover we're in here 3 or 4 times a month, usually for 6 or 8 items that we either forgot to pick up somewhere else, or for things we need to prepare a particular meal.

Just drove by there on my way home. They were advertising flank steak for $7.29 lb.

Flank steak? or Tenderloin? $7.99 for flank is high unless it's local....Or is this another interesting pricing strategy for them??

I don't really know for sure Deb. all I do know is the little changeable sign out front near the highway said
Flank Steak -$7.29 lb.
(Then, I guess, their 10% markup would make it $8.01)
I haven't priced real flank steak in so long I really don't know what would be a good price. I just saw the sign and thought I would share. I DID notice this morning that there were no prices listed on the sign at all.

I buy "fresh" meat from local restaurants that I have relationships with.....I know where they source it, and trust it's integrity....I then dry age it myself.

If there is tenderloin out there for $6.89 it's a no roll....or better terms...ungraded....could be good....might not be. You can roast it, and it should perform well....it's not for steaks at all....some butchers also sell cow tenders at a low price.

Hi Rob!
It's obvious you have come to conclusions that are not supported by facts. It is obvious from your last few posts that you have no clue what you are talking about. Do not worry this is not a fatal condition in today's world.

In previous times you would have already walked off a cliff, insulted someone with a gun, or ingested a poison substance. You are lucky to live in such benign times I guess.

While you will not be able to recover from this condition, people on this forum will make exceptions for you because it is obvious you, like many others, draw conclusions that are not supported by facts.

Don't worry everyone here recognizes that you cannot help this and will ignore you. Carry on Rob!
