Two New Restaurants

by RichardM » Sat Jun 01, 2013 9:58 pm

I have noticed work on two new chain type places in town over the past week.

Place The First is on Shelbyville Road in the old Buckheads and then Ernestos in the 12000 block at Moser road. It is becoming a Roosterswings. Like the place on Preston Hwy.

Second and Final one is on Dutchman's Lane across from Wild Eggs in the old Calistogas and it is becoming a Senor Iquanas. There is Mexican place about 200 feet up the road from it toward Brown's lane.

Just thought you all would like a heads up.

Senior Iguanas doesn't appear to be a chain in the true definition of the word...rather a local with multiple locations. Their website lists locations in Clarksville and Louisville. The first thing I noticed when I visited their website was a photo of a bunch of Mexican looking fellers playing eye-yie-yie-yie music table side...which pretty much means I won't be trying the place any time soon.

Roosters...<meh>...I've been to 2 or 3 of them (only by choice on the first visit)...If you're the kinda person who likes uncomfortable straight back booths, soggy-breaded wings and warm-ish domestic beer then this place will be right down yer alley.

Checking Urbanspoon, there are a few other restaurants that have popped up on that source....I'm not really sure that all of them are actually "new" restaurants or just new to Urbanspoon...Here are a couple I've never heard of:

Urban Kitchen - Mellwood in Clifton - Mexican and Cuban

Derby City Roadhouse - Mid-City Mall - Bardstown Rd. (Burgers - Pubfood)...Says "Coming Soon".

Irie's Caribbean Cafe - Jeffersonville - Quartermaster Ct.

Chef Maria's Greek Deli - On Fairfax in St. Matts.

Disclaimer - Haven't tried any of these places.

From reading on this forum, I believe this one has some "interesting" history.

Urban Kitchen is a food trailer with a stationary, rather than a mobile license. These guys came out of some highly respected local kitchens and are doing really good food.

Steve...I think you need to reconsider. We love the location in Clarksville. There's no fake Taco Bell stuff (or mariachi music) there. They serve a fabulous pork en adobo rojo (my fave), chili colorado that packs some heat, and as an occasional special Birria- "Savory- slow cooked beed dish traditional from Jalisco, Mexico". These meals surely don't come from the microwave! Huge portions too.

Just before Frankfort Ave on the right. It's in the lot with all the sculptures right next to the abandoned gas station. Park at the gas station. And yes, very good food. ex-havana rumba dudes.

It's in the lot of that place at the corner of Mellwood and Stevenson with all the birdbaths and lawn art and whatnot. Next to the deserted gas station.

Urban Kitchen started out in the parking lot in front of Bussman's Bakery in Clifton, but moved to the current location on Mellwood a couple months ago.

I agree with Lisa. Senor Iguana's is about the best Mexican place we've been locally and is always our go to. We too love the Clarksville location. The staff are amazing and always friendly and attentive. You only get the mariachi stuff if you ask for it. (that said, having a surprise birthday party at a Mexican restaurant was some of the most fun I have ever had

We big fans of Senior Iguanas too. We're there at least once every two weeks, and frequently more often than that. The "lunch in a hurry" is the best lunch deal around. Also I really like their salsa.

Ate at the Iguana's on Dutchman's tonight.

It was clean and the staff was friendly.

Will not be returning -- simply due to the food being dumbed down and somewhat pricey.

I ordered a chicken burrito and a chile relleno from the a la carte menu. They arrived on the same plate smothered in something which most closely resembled marinara.

I ate with fellow coworkers at Senor Iguanas a couple weeks ago. We all said we would not return either. The food was over priced, it wasn't very good, and the waiter was slacking (no refills on drinks).

Yeah the Mexican food in this town leaves a lot to be desired. It astounds me that El Nopal is able to stay in business among many other "local" places. Everything comes out on a "hot plate" because its microwaved.
Sounds like Senor Iguanas is doing the same thing?

El Mundo is our only go to place right now. About the only other place we will eat is Chuy's, which kills me since its a chain. I havent had good Mexican anywhere else Ive eaten.

We are going to try Guaca Mole tonight for the first time. We'll see how that is. I have heard all good things.

Edit- I should add Manny & Merle's is awesome, but I dont consider them "Mexican" more Californian. Although their normal house guac is bland, which I mentioned to the owner a few times. But everything else is awesome and the price is GREAT!
I eat, therefore I am.
