Eater Louisville Website Malware

by TimT » Fri May 31, 2013 2:34 pm

Robin. Delete this or move if it's a problem. I'm posting here because foodies are known to nibble on multiple websites.

Has anyone else experienced malware attacks on their computer when visiting the Eater Louisville website? Periodically (once evry three months?) when loading their website a window pops up and says that "Microsoft has detected critical activity on my PC that must be cleaned to avoid breakage"

Microsoft knowledge base says don't click on the window or try to close it. That loads the malware. Just turn off your computer, re-start, run a scan then avoid that website until they clean their page.

This just happened to me again today.
"I dined at my favorite restaurant last night. It was like Heaven, only better. They let me in".

No problem on the post, Tim. Thanks for sharing. Who knows, some people here might actually look at Wank ... er, Eater. ;)

Sorry for the problem you've encountered Tim. Wanker is aware of the issue—the warnings are most likely fake—and is working to fix it. From an email Wanker's CTO sent on May 11 to all of us editors:

This week, we started hearing from a few readers who use Windows that some activity to do with our sites was triggering fake "You have a virus, download this" messages, where "this" is actually a malware. A "scareware" attack: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scareware. Screenshot of what one user received - note the domain "servebeer.com" in the URL: http://cl.ly/image/1j3r2R0o3H0n

Our CTO thinks the issue most likely affects users whose computers already have a malware problem, but is still investigating. As of May 11, however, our tech team was unable to duplicate the problem.

Should it happen again, please let Wanker know immediately at help@curbed.com, including exactly what you were doing/clicking when it occurred, as well as the browser & OS name/version. Feel free to contact me as well if you'd like: zach@eater.com. Thanks and sorry again!
