Cunningham's downtown for sale

by Mark R. » Mon Apr 15, 2013 3:21 pm

According to this article from the Courier-Journal: http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20130411/NEWS01/304110038/Downtown-Cunningham-s-listed-sale-may-taken-off-market?nclick_check=1 the downtown location of Cunningham's is on the market. The son who owns the Creekside location may taken over and take it back off the market, but presently it's for sale for $675,000!

Something about that story made me think about the decline and fall of The Courier-Journal. Father and one daughter wanted to sell. Son wanted to keep it. Everybody wanted the money. :(

I doubt I am the only one who misses the old 5th and Breck location..

I went there after a bad breakup, a slobbering mess, and I had to eat something. I couldn't think of anywhere to go. So I went to Cunninngham's on 5th and Breckinridge and ate a fish sandwich by myself (it was completely empty) while watching the Guiding Light with a group of servers scattered about (LOL). The next day it burned down. My dad was a regular there for years. It was sad that it burned, but I was happy I made it that one last time. Cunninghams was a great place to go post Churchill Downs..

I used to frequent the 5th and Breck location for lunch and loved it. And, while I often went to the 4th St location I didn't think it was near as good as its former self. In fact it was a pale imitation.

Yep. Nothing beat the old location. It was about as blue blood Louisville as you could get.

The old Cunningham's was a classic example of how atmosphere affects our opinion of the food. In this case, nostalgia plays a big role too, when we compare the new to the old. I think Kunz's suffered greatly after they had to relocate from the fire they had on 4th and moved into the Conv. Ctr parking garage.

I think the Pendennis was more the blue blood place, although now that I think about it, the Pendennis and Cunningham's had similar menus and similar servers.

I am hearing that this is no longer for sale. The son, who runs Creekside is to take it over.
