WHAT IS READING CAMP?
Reading Camp is an intensive remedial literacy education program that serves 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade children who are struggling with learning to read. We partner with our neighborhood school, Zachary Taylor Elementary, to chose students who need this additional help. The St. Thomas Reading Camp will be held from July 15-19, from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. We will provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks. The morning will be learning center time with the afternoons being a time of recreation, field trips, and fun.
Reading Camp is an international organization with a network of camp programs in many locations. The central office is in Lexington, Kentucky. Reading Camp began as a single camp program in eastern Kentucky in 2002, operating under the auspices of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington. Today, there are eight Reading Camps in the state of Kentucky, and allied Reading Camps in Michigan, Iowa, Virginia, Ohio, South Carolina, and in Liberia and South Africa! Reading Camp was launched in the central African nation of Cameroon in June 2012. Reading Camp has served over 1,100 children in the last ten summers in Kentucky alone.
