Dinner today: Turkey, or other?

by Robin Garr » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:15 am

Today we're celebrating the holiday with friends, so it will be the traditional bird. When we're home, though, having no close family remaining here, I'll more often than not do something different, just to be different, even though I like turkey just fine. A duck, a goose, a pheasant, or even something not-poultry.

How about you? Whether you're staying home or dining in a restaurant (if you can find one open) or going over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's House, what's the main course on your holiday table? Turkey or no?

Gotta have Turkey! Quite often we have something else too but there always has to be Turkey as one of the items as part of the feast.

Christmas is different, we change the menu annually and I don't believe we've had the same thing on Christmas since we've been married (25 years). We've had a little bit of everything for Christmas from wild boar to pheasant and everything in between. It's one of our Christmas challenges to come up with something new and unusual!

Yummy!

Hey, let us know if it's open! Carnitas lunch preceding turkey dinner would work for me!

Back while I was still married I did Thanksgiving for all my in-laws every year. I would do a turkey one year and then switch off to something different - one year a pheasant or duck and game hens. One year it was a seafood buffet with crab legs shrimp, scallops and oysters. It was easily the most expensive Thanksgiving ever and it was the biggest bust. Everyone wanted turkey leftovers later in the day. So... ever since it's been a traditional turkey day.

After cooking every Thanksgiving for hundreds of people, I like what ever is served that I don't have to cook. Happy Thanksgiving.

Along with my turkey I always try something new. When I picked up my bird at Kingsley yesterday I opted for rabbit. I baked it with a S&P rub in a can of chicken broth. It turned out way better than I anticipated. Sometimes the most simple way is best. Honestly though the longer I pick at it, the more I want to try it with dumplings.----Happy Thanksgiving

Kielbasa, saurkraut, boiled potatoes, horseradish -- yes, I'm Lithuanian, but this is a first away from turkey.

Turkey will be there, though I likely won't be eatting any. I'm really picky on my bird.

We are big cooks in my family; Thanksgiving is at my sister's in New Albany. She does a turkey and a goose for the main course. I'll be eating goose, and then I'll make a turkey breast at home over the weekend for my family to enjoy with all the leftovers.

YUM!

I had my family over for a Thanksgiving breakfast. We had french toast made with thick sliced Breadworks white bread, bacon, potatoes, sausage, biscuits, and gravy, scrambled eggs, and fruit. We're not too big on the traditional meal. It was delicious!
